Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy: From Doctors Who Are Parents, Too!

Being a new parent can be absolutely terrifying. What do you do when the baby arrives? What does he need? Where will she sleep? How often does he wake up? What’s the best time to feed her? Does he need to go outside to pee (nope, sorry. Those are dogs. Try not to get too confused new mommies and daddies)?

It’s easy to turn to the internet, other parents and even your own parents for advice, but still some of the best advice on what to do with your new baby can come from your own time and research by reading baby books, and sometimes ignoring the advice of your great aunt.

We asked 3 sets of expecting parents which books they were reading, did a bit of reading ourselves and spent over 25 hours researching to find out what is the best book to have so you can really know what you can expect with your new little one.

We chose Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy: From Doctors Who Are Parents, Too! as the best baby book on the market right now. It was written by real doctors, real parents who all had real experiences and medical backgrounds, so it stood out in our minds above the rest. However, we found a few others that we and other new parents enjoyed as well. So, we are pleased here at Kokopax to give you a review of our top baby books on the market.

So a book that is full of advice from people who combine both medical knowledge and the craziness of pregnancy and parenthood experiences.

Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy: From Doctors Who Are Parents, Too!

So a book that is full of advice from people who combine both medical knowledge and the craziness of pregnancy and parenthood experiences.

This book is a great place for women who are looking for real advice from doctors and parents and can expect the source to be reputable. It comes from the world-class Mayo Clinic and provides a multitude of information that new parents can use when they’re freaking out looking desperately for information from even doctors who have been in the same situation.

  • About the book: (Chart)
  • Pages: 512
  • Author(s): Pregnancy Experts at the Mayo Clinic
  • Publisher: Da Capo Lifelong Books (one edition)
  • Date released: May 1, 2011
  • Language: English

This book covers a wide arrange of questions that new parents would be wondering throughout their pregnancy. This includes: a 40 week calendar that shows week-by-week updates on the baby’s growth.

If you want to know what your baby is doing each week he is developing inside of Mom, then the book has in depth information about each week and each stage of your new baby’s life.

The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy: From Doctors Who Are Parents, Too! is also a great place to look if you need advice on meal planning, how to exercise and even meditation during pregnancy (probably needed for both pregnant moms and expecting dads).

This book can be checked for advice for even the most embarrassing questions or difficult things that you simply cannot figure out on your own or by asking your sister (who had the easiest pregnancy ever… lucky).

One of the expecting parents we interviewed had this to say about the book,

“It’s always hard to go to the doctor and ask embarrassing questions even if you know that the doctor isn’t going to judge you. You secretly think that your doctor is judging you. It took me a while before I was comfortable with asking my own doctor face-to-face a lot of questions, so instead I turned to this book, because it was still a way to get advice from real medical professionals. Not only that, but this book was fun and easy to read. I liked looking about how my baby was growing, and I was happy to receive real advice from this book. Granted, it is a really big book, like textbook big, but being pregnant requires a textbook amount of information, so I was ok with thumbing through it. Great book!”

This book is the work of a real-life team of pregnancy experts, and they have spent time to give you as much information that you could possibly need. There are entries in the book about how your baby could be affected from everything from a glass of wine to previous health conditions like diabetes or even HIV.

The Mayo Clinic Guide  addresses concerns that new parents could have about even every-day concerns including nausea, back pain and other side-effects of pregnancy that Mom could suffer from every day. Not only that, but while thumbing through these pages, you could find best advice for self-care tips to make your pregnancy easier and as stress free as possible.

Another of our moms really enjoyed reading this book too. She said,

“I felt really comfortable reading a book written by real doctors. Even though there are a lot of books about pregnancy, this one just felt right for me. It was easy to find what I was looking for, and I felt like I learned a lot while reading it. My favorite part of the book was the part about how to handle anything that seemed to be trouble. I thought that it would scare me into constantly looking for some symptom of something to be scared of during my pregnancy, but I found it actually calming. If something was really wrong, then I knew exactly what to do, and things that I thought would freak me out turned out to be normal. It was really nice to have this book on hand.”

One of the biggest complaints that new parents had was that this book is simply very large and has a lot of information and could be overwhelming at times. Some parents preferred to use baby apps or other books that were slightly smaller and easier to find information in.

However, we have found that almost every parent who ever read this book found it to be among the very best, and we think you will too!

Belly Laughs,The Naked Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth

Jenny McCarthy used her own personal experience from her pregnancy to help new moms really understand what pregnancy is going to be like.

Belly Laughs, The Naked Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth gives a full, no-nonsense look into what it is like to be pregnant, and how some times are great and some of those times are going to be not so fun, but regardless, this book has been a national bestseller helping new moms for years.

Jenny McCarthy goes into as much detail as possible to help explain what you can really expect when you’re dealing with the pressure of watching your body change, trying to deal with building a nursery, hating the father of your child and even weird cravings. This book uses real-life experience and humor to really help new moms feel better about what they’re going through.

  • About the book: (Chart)
  • Pages: 192

Many baby books may try to hide some of the uglier sides of pregnancy, but Belly Laughs, The Naked Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth does the exact opposite. It helps new moms understand that there will be moments of insane hormone rages that could make you feel like you’re losing your mind one minute, crying over nothing the next and jumping for joy (if you weren’t feeling so heavy) all in a very short amount of time.

If you’ve ever been afraid of pregnancy, then this book will hopefully ease your fear with laughter by reading the experiences of someone who has been through it before.

New moms can also go spend time reading this book to understand that morning sickness, hemorrhoids and even how using your sexy panties are pretty much impossible until way after your baby is born.

One mom just finished the book, and she had this to say about it,

“I thought this book was an easy read, and also really funny. It is hard to be pregnant, so to go through a pregnancy book that made me laugh was a great experience. I learned a lot about someone else’s experience, and I also was entertained by McCartney’s personal stories. She didn’t leave out a single detail, and I felt like I could relate to almost all of it, and the stuff I haven’t gotten to yet seems a little less scary coming from a book that is full of comedy.”

Belly Laughs, The Naked Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth is a great book that includes anecdotes about how McCartney had to deal with acne, weight gain, water retention, hot flashes, gas and even the pain of labor.

She gives her first-hand account of what it was like to feel all of the things she felt while being pregnant, and also how she dealt with them.

This book was written to help pregnant women feel like no matter how difficult things could get, they aren’t alone and they never will be.

All women experience different things, and all women go through a bunch of crazy things with their bodies during pregnancy. If you’re looking for a book to help you feel connected to other real women, then this could be a great read for you.

Another one of our pregnant mommies to be said these things about the book,

“I really enjoyed reading this book! Some parts were so funny. There were even parts about how she felt about being constipated during pregnancy that made me laugh out loud. I felt more comfortable after reading this book, and I enjoyed reading it the entire time. It was short enough to feel more like a story than a how-to book, and that also was fun for me. I couldn’t put this book down, and it still helped me learn a lot.”

One of the biggest complaints about this book was simply how crass it is written. McCartney doesn’t hold back at all, and she uses a fair amount of foul language and disgusting stories that more conservative readers didn’t find amusing.

Also, some new parents were looking for more medically-backed books to help them through their pregnancy instead of simply stories from a celebrity about how her pregnancy went.

Despite those complaints, we at Kokopax think that this is a great and funny book that can help a lot of expecting moms through their pregnancies, and we recommend it for helping women feel like they aren’t the only ones dealing with the craziness of pregnancy.

This book has been around for decades to help women with all of their concerns and complications during their pregnancies. If you are looking for a book that covers everything, then this is absolutely the book for you.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting addresses everything from complications to what foods to eat which would be best for your baby during the pregnancy. The book is broken down into monthly sections about how your baby is developing during each term and what your baby is doing while inside of you. If you really want to get down to the very detailed descriptions of how your baby is developing and what he is doing during this time, then this is a great source of information for you.

One expecting couple really enjoyed having this book on hand,

“Of course we bought What to Expect When You’re Expecting because it is the quintessential baby book for new and expecting parents. We found that there every time we had a new concern, we were able to find an answer for it in the book. We thought that this was a great resource for us as new parents, and we really felt comfortable using this book to help us understand what we were both going to deal with before our baby was born.”

A lot of parents were really happy with how non-judgemental the book is, and that is quite a great option to cover all of the issues about pregnancy. The book is very big and has a lot of information, but it is all of the information that a new expecting couple would ever need.

If you only want to buy one baby book, then this could be the book you buy simply because it has been published with so much information for over 30 years.

This book is able to take parents through any possible concerns, how to handle them, how much weight to expect to gain, how to handle emotional breakdowns and even how to prepare their homes for the new baby.

Another mom was really pleased with this book,

“This is the only baby book I bought, and I felt like it was the only book I would ever have to have. Any time I had a question about my pregnancy, I was able to look up in the book by which month I was in at the time, and see what the book had to say about my concern. I was also pleased that there was information about how I would feel as I gained weight, how I would feel about how my emotions would fluctuate and even how I would feel about my spouse during my pregnancy. There is a lot of information in the book, and I really appreciated all of it.”

Some new parents were a little upset with the sheer amount of information in the book, and found it almost daunting. They didn’t feel like it was helpful, but instead was scary and made them over concerned simply because of how much information there is in the book and how it does revolve around possible complications.

However, this book is and has been one of the best baby books on the market for a long time, so we at Kokopax would absolutely not leave it off of our list.
