Best Baby Books for Dad

KOKOPAX TOP PICK

We have spent hours talking to dads, read hundreds of reviews, and spent absolutely ages reading books to babies. It was fun. We can now say, though, that if you are looking for a great book for your little one to read with dad, Because I’m Your Dad is the one to get. The design is great, with great pictures and a mischievous sense of humor! If you are looking for a great book to read at bedtime, bath time, or any other time, this is a good choice!

Today, we are going to look at books that Dads can read with their kids.

Dads require, let us say, a particular type of book to keep them interested. A lot of the books for really young children are a little … cute for your average father. Whilst mum might be more than willing to do the mouses voice, or to read about crocodile ballerinas for hours, dads prefer a book with more rough and tumble.

Not that they don’t want to play. The dads we talked to for this review often said that the books they enjoyed the most were the ones that let them do silly voices, or pick up their kid, or just shout something together.

They also said that some books focused on the special bond between a dad and their child, which helped them to bond with their own little one. In a world where fathers are often out at work all day, the few moments that they get to read to their children need to be really special, and these books aim to cultivate the unique connection between father and child.

How we review

We review by listening to real parents. Nothing can beat their real-life experience of using these products, and when asked they are more than happy to divulge all the features and failings of their purchases!

For this review, we collected and read hundreds of product reviews, and talked to the parents who had written them. Sometimes, what a company sells as a feature can in reality become a major annoyance, something which new parents have enough of. And they tell us about these annoyances, at length.

And so all the reviews below, though written by us, are based on real experiences.

Books for Dad Reviews

Of course, the books you chose to read with your kid are a matter of personal taste, and different people like different things!

One thing we have found, though, is that the graphic design of the book you choose matters a lot. It is not good having a book which talks at length about how much dads love their kids, if it is boring!

There is something about bright colors and shapes which really catches the attention of young children, and so when looking for a book, pay attention to the pictures as well as the words!

Beyond that, a good story, with plenty of animals of course, will allow you to really get creative with the voices!

So, without further ado, here are our favorites:

Editor’s Pick: Because I’m Your Dad

Because I’m Your Dad Review

A really heart-warming book, where the things that matter – mucking around, eating ice-cream, and jumping about, are at the forefront!

This book is our choice because, in short, it is really fun. Perhaps it doesn’t have the heart-felt emotion of some of the other books in this review, but it is a real scream to read and get creative with.

The story focuses on a monster dad and his child. The dad is permissive, to say the least, allowing his child to do anything he wants, because, as the title says, “I’m your Dad”!

The parents we talked to seem to really engaged with this book, and said that their children did to. At its heart is a story about fatherly affection, and the length a dad will go to for his child, and as such overflows with joy.

Because I’m Your Dad

A really heart-warming book, where the things that matter – mucking around, eating ice-cream, and jumping about, are at the forefront!

Advantages

  • The character design here is really great, and the dads we talked to really responded to it. The energetic pictures are just right for the rough and tumble relationship that many dads have with their children, and many found that they could really empathize with the central characters, even if they are monsters!
  • The story is written in a very appealing way, using simple but affectionate language, which can be a real help when your child is learning how to talk. The jokes are also pretty funny, meaning that dad will not get bored reading the book, no matter how many times he has to repeat it!
  • The love that overflows from this book, though, is really its greatest asset. If dad has to be away for long periods at a time, this is the perfect book to reassure your little one of what their dad is for!
  • The robust design of this book will ensure that it lasts a long time, no matter how many times it is read!

Disadvantages

  • Some found the last page of this book, “because that’s what my dad did for me”, a little awkward. However, even those who did admitted that they could easily change what they said when they reached that page, and that the response of their child to rest of the book made it worth it!

Your Baby’s First Word Will be DADA

Your Baby’s First Word Will be DADA Review

Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC’s The Tonight Show, did everything in his power to ensure that his daughter’s first word was “dada”, and this book was one of the ways he tried to achieve it!

The book is very short, with perhaps 20 words, at least half of which are “dada”. The parents we talked to were divided over whether this book worked in the way that Jimmy wanted it to, but all agreed that it was a great read!

The story is simple but enjoyable, and has plenty of shout-a-long bits that make reading time really fun. In addition, the animal characters in the book are really well designed, and very engaging for your little one.

Your Baby’s First Word Will be DADA

Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC’s The Tonight Show, did everything in his power to ensure that his daughter’s first word was “dada”, and this book was one of the ways he tried to achieve it!

In addition, the book has several other features to recommend it:

Advantages

  • The graphic design on this book is very modern, and almost perfect. The characters, which consist of a series of animal fathers and their children, are all great – clearly drawn, and colorful.
  • The animal theme also gives parents a chance to work on that all important skill – animal sounds! This is the central idea of the book – whilst you try to get your kid to say DADA, they shout MOO back at you!
  • The simplicity of the book is its strength. Whilst there is no real story to speak of, parents are free to improvise, and having such great pictures of all kinds of animals is really helpful for having a focus!
  • We are not sure if the book will ensure that your child’s first word is DADA, but it will certainly teach them a lot of other words, and all the animal sounds!

Disadvantages

  • Some parents we spoke to thought that the book should have more of a narrative structure. Without wishing to be mean, we think that this criticism is more to do with them than their children – it can perhaps be boring for a dad to read a simplistic story over and over again, but we assure you that for your child it is not!

I Love You Dad

I Love You Dad

This book has a slightly different mood to the more rough-and-tumble books we are reviewing today.

Here, the focus is on the emotional bond between a father and their child, and the book’s message really helps dads to bond with their child. Especially between the ages of 2 and 4, when dad can feel a little bit left out, this book can be great for re-kindling that special connection!

The story revolves around two bears – a dad and a son. The father bear encourages his son to start doing things as he becomes old enough to do them, and the little bear responds by trying to tell his father that he loves him.

I Love You Dad

This book has a slightly different mood to the more rough-and-tumble books we are reviewing today.

The book is truly heart-warming!

Advantages

  • The graphic design of this book looks a little old-fashioned nowadays, but we would prefer to call it “classic”! The illustrations are really beautiful, and more detailed than with many modern books. The hand-drawn feel also helps children to gain an appreciation for drawing that other books do not.
  • The language used here is a little more complex than some of the other books we have reviewed today, but this in itself has great advantages. Some of the parents we talked to had been reading this book to their kids for years without them getting bored, and each time it is read a child will understand and learn new words!
  • The illustrations in this book are really detailed, which means that your little one will have fun finding new things in the pictures every time you read through.
  • And even when your child grows up a bit, this book can still be used – some of the parents we talked to were still using this book to teach their children to read. If the book lasts long enough after being read so many times, it will eventually be your child reading it to you!

Disadvantages

  • The book is printed in a traditional way – that is, with standard paper. This is great for older children, who often need practice to turn pages and handle a book, but can mean that the book is destroyed by your toddler’s sticky fingers!

My Dad Loves Me!

My Dad Loves Me! Review

This book is great, and the interactive elements make it really fun to read. It focuses on a series of animals, and explains that for every animal the father does a different thing with their kid.

So the dog father plays with his son, the elephant father walks with his son, and the polar bear dad loves his son.

My Dad Loves Me!

This book is great, and the interactive elements make it really fun to read. It focuses on a series of animals, and explains that for every animal the father does a different thing with their kid.

This story, though certainly simplistic, is heart-warming, and the ending really celebrates the bond between father and child.

Advantages

  • The book is really sturdy, a bonus for a book that is primarily designed for very young children. It doesn’t matter if your little angel decides to chew the book, this one will survive!
  • The language used in this book is really simple and to the point. It introduces some really important words, without over complicating the story. Many parents we spoke to found that this book really helped their child when they were learning to talk.
  • The focus on the relationship between father and child is what makes this book really special. No other book explores this bond in so many ways, and the ending of the book allows fathers to express their love for their child in a more “macho” way than in other books!
  • The repeated narrative allows children to quickly learn the story, and many parents said that their children pretended to read the book after only a few times through!

Disadvantages

  • The repetitious narrative might mean that dad tires of reading this book, especially if he has to do it 3 or 4 times in a row!

Our Final Thoughts

So which to choose?

Well, as with everything you choose for your little one, which board book is best for dad and little one is a very personal question. Your child will react differently to different books, and it is impossible to predict which one will become their favorite.

There are some things to look for, though. Books which are colorful, and have great characters, are particularly good at engaging children. It also helps if they have animals in them!

Our choice today is Because I’m Your Dad. This book has really a really colorful design, and a great story, and is educational without being boring.

So if you are looking for a book that both dad and little one will really enjoy reading, then this is the one for you!
