What is a Board Book?

Put simply, a board book is a book designed to be hard-wearing enough to read to a young baby!

These books have been around for quite a few years now, and they remain a favorite of parents. They are printed on hard-wearing board, so it does not matter if your little angel decides to chew the book or throw it across the room, it will survive!

The best books have endearing stories, and great graphic design. Some of the books we review here are perennial favorites, and some are relatively recent publications. What unites them is how appealing they are to babies and children – the parents we talked to recommended these books to us, and after reading them to our own little ones, we agree with them!

How we review

We review by listening to real parents. Nothing can beat their real-life experience of using these products, and when asked they are more than happy to divulge all the features and failings of their purchases!

For this review, we collected and read hundreds of product reviews, and talked to the parents who had written them. Sometimes, what a company sells as a feature can in reality become a major annoyance, something which new parents have enough of. And they tell us about these annoyances, at length.

And so all the reviews below, though written by us, are based on real experiences.

Top Board Books for Baby Reviews

The board book you chose for you and your child is, of course, quite a personal choice. For instance, if you are you the kind of parent who likes to do the voices, then choose a book with lots of cute animals to impersonate!

Different children fall in love with different books, of course, but one thing that unites our favorite books is the colorful design. Especially for young children, the pictures in the book are incredibly important, and not only in terms of content – bright, colorful pictures will really catch the eye of your child, and ensure that they engage with the book.

Beyond that, finding a book that your child really loves is a matter of trial and error. However, you could do worse than the ones we have reviewed here!

So, without further ado, here are our favorites:

Best Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Our top baby books of the ones we reviewed for a number of reasons. This book has been a favorite of parents for quite some time now, and when looking at it again we could definitely see why!

The illustrations in the book are very bright and colorful, and really engage your little one.

The story is also great, and is what makes this book stand out from the crowd. The whole story is told in rhyme, which seems to please the babies we read it to, and makes reading it as a parent an absolute joy.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Our top baby books of the ones we reviewed for a number of reasons. This book has been a favorite of parents for quite some time now, and when looking at it again we could definitely see why!

Another great advantage of this book, though, is that it is educational without being boring. It uses the 26 characters of the alphabet as characters in the story – a and b and c decide to go up the coconut tree, which sounds like a great idea until all the other letters of the alphabet decide to follow them.

The tree cannot take the weight, and eventually all the letters fall out of the tree, and end up in a big heap underneath!

Advantages

  • The rhyming structure of this book is a joy. The children we read it to found the rhythm of the story really engaging, and particularly enjoyed the climax of the story, when all the letters fall to earth.
  • The edition we reviewed is an extended edition which we had not come across before – after all the lower-case letters have had their fun, they are joined by all their “mamas and papas and uncles and aunts”, the upper-case letters! This really adds an extra dimension to the story, and should ensure that your little one does not get bored of reading this book for a very long time.
  • The catchy phrases in the book, from the titular “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” to the madcap “skit skat skoodle doot” are great fun to repeat with your kid. Some of the parents we talked to even said that these had become catch phrases that they shared with their child when they were growing up, and both children and parents had fond memories of singing such nonsense around the house!
  • The colors in this book, though, are what really set it apart from the competition. The story is crazy, and the colors used really match this, from the hot-pink border of each page to the luxuriant green of the central palm tree.

Disadvantages

  • Perhaps the only disadvantage here is that your little one might fall in love with this book so much that you tire of reading it to them. We don’t think so, though.

Dear Zoo

Dear Zoo Review

This book is 30 years old now, but is not showing its age. It features loads of endearing animals, which are sure to delight your little one.

And for those parents who like to put on the voices of the characters they are reading about, the animals in this book offer endless scope for creativity, from doing the gruff voice of the lion to however you think a giraffe talks!

This book has sold over two million copies worldwide, and it is not hard to see why. Indeed, we remember reading this book when we ourselves were children, and upon opening the book for this review many happy memories came flooding back!

Dear Zoo

This book is 30 years old now, but is not showing its age. It features loads of endearing animals, which are sure to delight your little one.

Advantages

  • From the moment you open the book, you will see why it has become such a favorite! The parents we talked to said that their children brought this book to them for them to read more than any other book.
  • The flaps in the book are carefully incorporated into the storyline. With some board books, the addition of these interactive features feels like a gimmick that has been added on, but here children love lifting them up to see what animal is underneath!
  • The language used in the book is really pared-down, and many parents find that it is perfect when teaching their children to talk and read. The story, though it is about a zoo, cleverly works in everyday phrases and words, and is sure to give your child a head start!
  • Many of the parents we talked to found that there children really enjoyed the choice of animals in the book, from the naughty monkeys to the ferocious lion.

Disadvantages

  • We really can’t criticise this book in terms of its story, language, or design. Perhaps some will find it too short, especially when their little darling brings it to them to read for the 47th time that day!

The Going-To-Bed Book

The Going-To-Bed Book Review

Another classic bed time book, and again it is not hard to see why! Not only do children really engage with the silly story told in the book, but many parents find its central message – about the importance of going to bed – an extremely important one!

There is nothing better at bedtime, when trying to calm down your over-stimulated child, than a book which will soothe them to sleep with relaxing pictures and a soft rhythm.

The art work in this book is also excellent. The author, Sandra Boynton, has had her pictures published all over the world, and it is not hard to see why. The pictures are beautiful, and easy for children to relate to, whilst also being funny enough that parents will enjoy flicking through the book.

The Going-To-Bed Book

Another classic bed time book, and again it is not hard to see why! Not only do children really engage with the silly story told in the book, but many parents find its central message – about the importance of going to bed – an extremely important one!

Advantages

  • The central story of this book involved animals watching the sun slowly going down, and getting ready for bed. This can be really handy for convincing your own little one to get their head down. After seeing the giraffe, the lion, and the mouse yawning and going to sleep, your child might just want to do the same!
  • The pictures are colorful without being overstimulating, which means that reading the book is more of a relaxing experience than with some other board books.
  • Similarly, the rhythm of the story here is quite relaxing. There are no bug jumps, and nothing for you and your child to shout together. Sometimes, these catchphrases can be really great, but not when you are trying to make your little one go to sleep!
  • And for those parents who love to do the voices of the animals, this book offers ample space for your creativity!

Disadvantages

  • A great book for sending your little one off into the land of nod. Some parents find that this is not the most exciting book to read with their child, but it is perfect at what it does – soothing and relaxing both of you after a hard day of play and work!

Where Is Baby’s Belly Button?

Where Is Baby’s Belly Button? Review

This book is great, and the interactive elements make it really fun to read. It is based on the worldwide favorite game of parents and children – peek-a-boo.

This makes it perfect for children of all ages, and especially the very young. It is a great introduction to reading together, because the book itself is an invitation to play, and much fun can be had whilst reading along.

Karen Katz, the author of this book, has written and illustrated more than 50 books, and her experience really shines through in this book. It seems she really understands what parents and children want from a board book – an engaging story, great pictures, but also an invitation to play and bond with each other.

Where Is Baby’s Belly Button?

This book is great, and the interactive elements make it really fun to read. It is based on the worldwide favorite game of parents and children – peek-a-boo.

Advantages

  • The book is really sturdy, a bonus for a book that is primarily designed for very young children. It doesn’t matter if your little angel decides to chew the book, this one will survive!
  • The flaps in the book are really fun – large and sturdy enough that even toddlers are able to lift them up to reveal the pictures underneath. Many of the parents we spoke to mentioned that this part of the book really engaged their child, even when they were really young.
  • The colors and illustrations seem to hold a peculiar fascination for young children. In honesty, we do not really know why so many babys are instantly drawn to the color and design of this book – all we can say is that they are!
  • The language used is also great, introducing your child to some important concepts (behind, under, etc.) that can be really useful when they are learning to speak!

Disadvantages

  • Some people find that, as their child grows up, this book quickly becomes a little bit too childish. Whilst the colors and story of this book are a bit simplistic, the fact that it is really appealing to very young children means that it is almost a must-purchase – nothing calms a young toddler down like this book!

Our Final Thoughts

So which to choose?

Well, as with everything you choose for your little one, which board book is best for you is a very personal question. Your child will react differently to different books, and it is impossible to predict which one will become their favorite.

There are some things to look for, though. Books which are colorful, and have great characters, are particularly good at engaging children. It also helps if they have animals in them!

Our choice today is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. This book has really a really colorful design, and a great story, and is educational without being boring.

So if you are looking for a book that both you and your little one will really enjoy reading, then this is the one for you!
