Baby carriers and wraps are an important piece of baby gear and many new parents will vouch for this. Toting your newborn around hands free is a luxury — whether you have to get things done around the house or have to make a quick run to the local farmer’s market, go out shopping or even for a walk in the park, these wraps and carriers make it extremely convenient and comfortable for you as well as your baby.

Never used one? That shouldn’t really deter you either as most of these carriers and wraps come with complete instructions on how to properly wear them along with the safety guidelines associated with each style. And yes, wraps involve a bit of a learning curve at the initial stage so you must be willing to spare some time to learn the right (and safe) wrapping technique; however, once you get the hang of them and find that you can be out the door in a matter of minutes, you won’t want to go back.

So whether you are considering a structured carrier or a wrap… let it be known that there are plenty of options available in both categories.

Difference between wraps and carriers

Wrap carriers: Wrap carriers are a great way to have your newborn snuggled close to you in a manner that is safe and comfortable. Usually made of one continuous length of lightweight woven  fabric (usually 95% cotton and 5% spandex), these are free size and can accommodate bodies of all shapes and sizes.

Soft structured carriers: Soft structured carriers are available in multiple designs, sizes and shapes and can be used to carry the baby in both forward-facing as well as backward-looking positions. These carriers are also known for their well tested safety and durability specifications. Structurally designed and supported to offer the right comfort when your child is placed in one, these are almost zero risk. They are also quick and easy to get on and take off and there is no learning curve involved. What’s more, you will come across plenty of products that come equipped with additional zippers, intuitive attachments along with snaps and straps.

In terms of flexibility, carriers and wraps can be used to rest the child on the front, on the back and even on the hip. Wraps are most suited to newborns although they do grow with the baby and can be used until they are toddlers.

Besides being a convenient accessory, one of the most important benefits of baby wearing is that the child is kept close to the parent; this makes these little bundles of joy calmer and they are found to cry less as paediatric experts would agree.  Additionally, it is also know to assist with emotional and social growth.

In this article, we review some of the most popular baby carriers and baby wraps to help you make a better buying decision depending on your own personal needs and requirements.

We took several factors into consideration while reviewing these carriers, such as ease of use, flexibility, form factor and safety.

Boba Wrap Baby Carrier

Boba WrapEarlier called the Sleepy Wrap, this carrier is most suited for beginner moms. It is easy to use and extremely comfortable for both, the baby wearer as well as the baby.

Made out of a single stretch of long soft material, the Boba Wrap Baby Carrier is ideal for babies from 0-18 months or up to 35 lbs in weight.

The method of using the wrap isn’t intuitive, but it is easy to follow once you read the well detailed instructions that come along with it. The wrap also makes it easy to place the baby in once it is correctly worn. Place the child in such a manner that the top of his/her head is just below your chin

If you find that your baby requires some extra support to rest his/her head, simply roll up a soft washcloth and tuck it in place.

Drawback

  • Several regular users voiced that the fabric although soft and lightweight does stretch with regular use. On the plus side, however, the Boba Wrap Baby Carrier is made out of a fabric so soft that it feels like an extension of your outfit.

The wrap has an easy learning curve thanks to the demonstration videos available on the Moby Wrap website. It also comes with a step by step instruction booklet complete with images at each juncture.

It can be used comfortably at different ages of your baby’s growth (can be used for infants of a minimum of 8 pounds to toddlers that weigh upto 35 pounds using different wearing positions) and adjusted for all body types as well.

The videos on the manufacturer’s website display the many positions the child can be placed in right from newborn to the hip hold, kangaroo holds and various hug holds. The wraps are available in fabrics made of 100 percent organic cotton as well bamboo wraps made out of 70 percent viscose fibers from bamboo and 30 percent cotton.

Baby K’tan ORIGINAL Baby Carrier

Baby K'tan Original Cotton Wrap

The Baby K’tan Original baby Carrier is a crossover between a wrap and a soft structured carrier. Many seem to like this mix as the product offers the convenience of a carrier along with the comfort and appearance of a wrap.

What we found most appealing about this wrap carrier is that it is designed without any complicated zippers, rings or snaps. It has a single strap that runs across your back which can be adjusted according to your level of comfort.

You can place the child in several positions and the wrap allows for plenty of options to configure it on your body. The manufacturer’s website also lays out the various ways in which you can position the baby to get the best out of the wrap.

The material used is cotton which is machine-washable. We found the carrier to be a bit tight when we put on for the first time, but it did stretch to form a perfect fit after a few uses.

The baby K-tan is available in several sizes for both dads and moms. It is designed to carry babies from 8 pounds to 35 pounds and is extremely popular on sites such as Amazon as is evident with the 1700-odd reviews. You certainly can’t go wrong with this one.

ERGObaby Four Position 360 Baby Carrier

The Ergobaby Four Position is a soft structured carrier that is designed to position your baby in four different positions… something that is rarely seen in other manufacturers’ products in the soft structured segment. These seating positions include the font forward facing, rear facing, hip and back carrier.

Among the non-sling carriers offered on the market, this is also the most comfortable model we have come across. The carrier is designed for use in the weight bracket of 7-33 pounds. An infant insert (which is sold separately) is also available for squirmy little bambinos.

One of the most major selling points of the Ergobaby Four Position is that it causes little or no fatigue when used for prolonged periods of time. The Ergobaby also has a nice bucket seat which nicely positions the baby’s body in it. It comes with a sunshade that can be used to block out the sun when the child is asleep.

The design of the carrier also serves to support the baby’s back really well … almost like how the child would be seated when in a chair. A velcro strap also helps to firmly in strap the child in a seated position. This does have one drawback though – the Velcro makes a loud ripping when un-patching which may wake up a sleeping baby.
