KOKOPAX TOP PICK

After hours upon hours of fun with all our test parent’s wonderful dogs, we are pleased to announce that the Richell Pet Sitter Gate is the winner of our best dog gate for your home.

This superb design comes in a stylish wood finish and is complete with an internal pet door to allow your dog in and out with ease. As a step over design, this dog gate won’t be suitable for elderly people and larger dogs, who should they be brave enough, can leap over it.

Our parents all commented on how quick and easy it is to install, and how nice it fit in with their home furnishings. The gates fine wire mesh means it is suitable for all animals, excluding cats, who though unable to squeeze through, simply jumped over instead.

We loved this gate, which is ideal for all for any but the largest dogs.

What should I look for when buying a good quality dog gate?

Making sure you get the best quality gate for your dogs is not as easy as it might sound. Most dog owners have at some stage or another, come home to find broken cups and plates on the floor, or have come home to see plant pots and dirt all over their brand new hardwood floor.

The simple addition of a dog gate can make the world of difference to your home life, as it offers the chance of some peace of mind knowing that you can keep your over excitable, little menace safely out of trouble in a safe part of the house.

When trying to find a top dog gate for your home, here are a few things to keep an eye out for:

Size

Finding the right size gate for your home and dog is essential. You need to make sure that the gate will fit the door or passageway that you intend to use it for. Be sure to measure the doorway to make sure that you buy the appropriate gate for your needs.

You also need to make sure it is appropriate for your animals. There is no point buying a gate with large gaps between the bars, if your dog or cat can fit through them. Likewise, don’t buy a step over design gate if you have a dog large enough to jump it, as this would also be equally pointless.

Usabilty

Any gate you buy should be easy to use and suitable for your needs. Again, there is no point buying a step over design if you have mobility issues. If the design features a gate, it should be easy to lock and unlock, but safe from the chance that your dog is able to unlock it also.

Quality of the product.

Ensuring that you buy a good quality dog gate is also very important. After all, you don’t want to buy one to find that it breaks straight away, or to come home to find that your dog has chewed it to pieces.

Making sure that the dog gate is well designed and made from strong materials is a must. You can check the product description and read customer reviews to find out just how good the product really is, before you buy it.

How we review

Kokopax Top Choice: Richell Pet Sitter Gate

Richell Pet Sitter Gate

Designed to fit doorways or passages between the sizes of 28.3 to 41.3 inches wide, this wonderfully designed gate from Richell is made from polished wood and metal. We loved its classy design, that our parents agreed really made their hallway more look stylish than the other gates on this list.

It is an easy to install design, which thanks to its pressure mounted fittings, screws in place in a matter of seconds. Rubber stops on the screw ends prevent any marks on your walls, which we found to be effective, no matter how tight you did them up.

The gate itself is an easy step over design, meaning that you are unburdened by having to constantly open and close a gate as you come and go. There is a small, lockable pet door built into the gate to allow your pets to come and go whenever you open it.

The fine wire mesh makes this gate suitable for all your animals, provided they are not too tall. In our trails, the gate prevented our cats going through, but sadly couldn’t stop them from simply leaping over it.

Richell 3-in-1 Convertible Elite Pet Gate

Richell 3-in-1 Convertible Elite Pet Gate Review

When we first came across this panel pet gate from Richell, we felt like it was almost too good to be true. Amazing for its simplicity, we found this design to be outstanding during our tests.

It comes as either 4 or 6 connected wood panels, that when arranged in a zigzag pattern, supports the gate well against any dog attempt to break through. Though again, not suitable for larger dogs and cats, it was extremely successful at keeping our dogs in one place.

The foldable design has other added bonuses. It is simple to setup and can be place anywhere, with no need to fix it to walls or fiddle with pressure screws. The gate can also be used as a room divider, and our parents loved how the 6 panel gate could actually fold up to become a fully enclosed dog cage too.

This is a really imaginative approach to the problem of keeping your dog where you want it to stay and one that would have received top marks if it was suitable for larger dogs.

North States Supergate Extra Wide Wire Mesh Gate

North States Supergate Extra Wide Wire Mesh Gate Review

We loved this dog gates easy to install feature, which for such a large gate, made it probably the easiest conventional gate we have ever tried. Rather than featuring screw up pressure mounts, you simply hold the gate in place and use its easy adjust and lock bar to secure it in place.

The design itself is the suitable for all sizes of dog, thanks to its fine metal mesh and its tall size. It is also very strong, so won’t be pushed aside by even the largest dog. For all of you with large dogs, this is the design that we found had the best chance of keeping them locked safely away.

The big drawback to this design is that since it is too tall to simply step over and doesn’t feature a gate, you need to unlock it and remove it in order to pass by. Our parents all said that if they were coming and going this design would quickly become a nascence so is not suitable for anyone who needs to come and go.

  • Not suitable for regular coming and going through.

Carlson 44-Inch Extra Wide Walk Through Gate with Pet Door, 29 to 44-Inch

Carlson 44-Inch Extra Wide Walk Through Gate with Pet Door, 29 to 44-Inch Review

This was our experts preferred choice as top gate for your animals. It is an extendable design, with screw pressure mounts, meaning that it can be easily and quickly set up anywhere. Though not designed to be as easy to move around as other designs featured here, it is a superbly designed gate nonetheless.

Unlike the wood gates, its metal frame is guaranteed chew proof, while the design itself features both a walk through gate for dogs and humans, and a cat gate for our little feline friends.

To be honest, most cats other than our rather overweight ones, simply jumped over when we places food the other side anyway, so the cat gate, though nice is not a guarantee of stopping your cat getting through.

That aside, this gate not only looks impressive, but really is. Everyone commented on how well made and strong it was, with many parents saying if they wanted a more permanent gate for different sized dogs, that this would be the one they would buy.

Unlike the wood gates, its metal frame is guaranteed chew proof, while the design itself features both a walk through gate for dogs and humans, and a cat gate for our little feline friends.

Cons

  • More agile cats simply jumped over when they found the gate closed.
  • After prolonged use, some dogs worked out a way to climb over it using the horizontal bars.

Our Final Thoughts

If you are looking for the top gate for your small or medium sized dog, then we recommend the Richell Pet Sitter Gate for you.

Its fine wire mesh ensures that even the smallest animal cannot get through, while its easy, step over design, means that it is the easiest gate to use without it becoming a pain to have to go back and forth through.

Simple to install, our parents said this was definitely the gate they would buy for their home. However, if you are looking for a gate for larger dogs, then we recommend the North States Supergate Extra Wide Wire Mesh Gate, as its added height make it impassable for all dogs, no matter their size.

Do dog gates really work?

An indoor dog gate is a great way to ensure that your adventurous dog is kept safely in one place and so free of mischief. The addition of a dog gate to your home can provide immense peace of mind, as it will keep your dog out of harm’s way.

Most people choose to use a dog gate to keep their dog separated in one part of the house at certain times during the day or night, in order to prevent them running amok and destroying the place.

This is prefect solution for guaranteeing that while you are at work or otherwise distracted, that you are not going to come back to discover your house looks like it has been bombed.

A gate also helps guarantee that you are not going to get woken up by some hairy monster jumping on you in the dead of night. A good gate for your dog is therefore a very effective way of keeping your dog out of trouble, while giving you total peace of mind too.

Can you use an indoor dog gate for your other animals?

Provided that you buy a dog gate that features smaller bars to prevent your smaller pet from squeezing through them, there is no reason why your dog gate cannot be used for all your animals.

Many dog gates are in fact designed for use with other animals. Some even feature cat gates, that will allow your cat to pass though when you open decide to open it, though this might cause your dog to get a little annoyed at your obvious favoritism.

How to make a gate for your dogs?

Making your own gate for your dog can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make it. Many of the parents we spoke to used simple obstructions to prevent their dog from getting loose.

Most of our parents swore by a large cardboard box that they put stones in the bottom of in order to prevent doggie from pushing it out of the way. They said by leaving the top flaps open, their dog was unable to jump over to get free.

Other parents used two bars that they would push between the door pillars, then would drape over a piece of heavy cloth to form an impassable obstacle to prevent their dog getting past.

If you want a gate made of metal or even wood, we would probably suggest just buying one instead as for the time and money spent, you are saving very little by making your own one.
