Best Baby Gate for Stairs

KOKOPAX TOP PICK

It took our 12 person research team more than 3 weeks of full time testing to confirm that our top gate for your home is the Munchkin Easy-Close Metal Safety Gate.

Though coming in neck and neck with our personal favorite, the Summer Infant Multi-Use Deco Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate, the Munchkin gate’s easy to use lock scored slightly higher with our parents and so took first place.

Though not suitable for top of stairs use, without the addition of screw in wall mounts, this gate is suitable for all other areas of the house, including at the bottom of the stairs.

It is quick and simple to install, giving our test parents no trouble to install within our set time limit of 10 minutes. The gate is a full front opening design, which we must say, on the whole we prefer also.

Its handle and lock system is fantastic too, safe and easy to use, while offering your baby little chance of opening it. The gate has a dual locking system, so you can lock it to prevent it opening in any direction you don’t wish it to, while its auto close system is reliable and very handy.

So if you’re really are looking for that best pressure mounted gate for your baby or large animals, then this is the gate for you.

All you need to know about pressure fixed gates.

A pressure fixed gate is the perfect way to secure areas of your home for your baby or animals. Whether you want to separate your baby from your over excited dogs, or to make sure baby can’t get out of its nursery and start roaming around without you, a baby gate is the perfect way to do this without causing much of an inconvenience.

Finding a well-designed gate will make your life so much easier, while keeping baby safe inside whatever part of the house you want it in. Most high quality baby gates are screw fixed, meaning that not only are they easy to install, but that they can be easily used throughout the house.

You can use a pressure gate anywhere throughout your home, except at the top of the stairs. We strongly recommend that you do not use a pressure fixed gate at the top of the stairs, without the addition of special screw into your walls mounts.

A baby gate at the top of the stairs needs to be strong in case of a fall, so this requires added strength that a pressure fixed gate cannot provide on its own.

Some baby gates will be full front opening, meaning that the whole gate swings open, whereas others will be a smaller gate that is positioned in the center of the gate. The advantage of the full front opening gate is that the area to pass through is much wider, though the gate itself is usually weaker as a result of this design.

All gates should have a good quality lock and auto close system to make sure the gate is safe for your child.

Kokopax Top Choice: Munchkin Easy-Close Metal Safety Gate

Munchkin Easy-Close Metal Safety Gate Review

When the results were all in, there was only one winner of our top pressure mounted baby gate contest. The Munchkin Easy-Close Metal Safety Gate is the most effective and user friendly gate for your home.

We loved its simple but strong design, despite the fact that it only weighs 13.7 pounds. At this weight, it is light enough to easily move around the house with no trouble at all.

Though the design is not good at keeping your smaller animals from getting through, we found it great for our babies as its wide bars allow good visibility for both baby to see parents and for parents to keep an eye on baby.

Our parents loved its full swing open gate, which thanks to the sturdiness of the design didn’t make the gate feel any weaker. The dual lock system is simple to operate, while the gates lock is also simple and reliable.

Our parents and experts really loved this design, and though it should not be used for top of the stairs use without wall mounts, this gate will fit wonderfully, anywhere else in your home you choose to put it.

Summer Infant Multi-Use Deco Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate

Summer Infant Multi-Use Deco Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate Review

For anyone who has read more than one of our baby gate reviews, you will have come across this wonderful baby gate from Summer Infant.

Though we do our very best to ensure that our product reviews are as diverse as possible, the simple problem with this gate is that it is one of the best multi use baby gates on the market today, and so keeps coming out top in our tests.

Not only do we love this gate, with several members of our team actually owning this gate at home, but our parents love it too. In fact, our research showed that it is not just our parents that love it, but most of the parents who buy it love it too. You only need to take a second to see its extremely high score on customer feedback to realize how successful this gate really is.

This gate is reliable, sturdy, and extremely safe. It has all the features of the previous gate, though the main difference is that it is not a full front opening gate, but rather features a smaller gate that opens in the center.

If you have smaller pets then this is the baby pressure gate we recommend for you.

Regalo Extra WideSpan Walk Through Safety Gate

Regalo Extra WideSpan Walk Through Safety Gate Review

If you have a wider than normal passageway or archway, then this expandable gate from Regalo is the one for you. It was another design that scored very highly on safety, being made from metal; we found it to be both strong and sturdy, as well as long lasting. Its lift to open, push down to close lock, was very parent friendly, while being too hard for baby to open on its own.

The main reason to buy this gate over the others on this list is for its ability to extend to fit large gaps. The drawback is that it doesn’t have a safety lock to prevent dual direction opening, meaning that it is not safe for top of stairs use.

Evenflo Soft and Wide Gate

Evenflo Soft and Wide Gate ReviewWe thought we would include this gate mainly because it is an out of the box, innovative approach to the problem of baby gate design. In fact, it is not really a gate at all, but rather a passage blocker.

Essentially it is two bars that you pressure screw between your door frame or passageway. It is super lightweight, so is very easy to move around and store. It is designed as a non-permanent feature that can be quickly installed wherever you need it, whenever you need it.

Though it is in no way as safe as the metal baby gate designs, our parents loved the simple and usable solution it offers to the problem of fencing off parts of your home.

The main feature of this design is its portability, though since it is not actually a gate in itself, by putting it up in your home you are in effect, fencing yourself off into one area of the house along with baby too.

  • A little harder to install as not a solid design so more fiddly.

Our Final Thoughts

The truth is we love all the pressure mounted baby gates on this list. As with any product, they all have their own strengths and weaknesses, but provided that the design is suitable for your needs, then no matter which one you choose you are going to be totally satisfied.

Since the point of this review was to find an overall winner, and provided you don’t have small animals, we award the gold medal to the Munchkin Easy-Close Metal Safety Gate as it is extremely safe, while giving the best overall results, in terms of satisfaction. It truly is the champion of the best pressure mounted baby gates for your home.

Do pressure gates really work?

Yes, modern pressure gates are a highly effective way of separating or closing off parts of your home, to keep your baby or pets safe. These days, having a gate to cordon off part of your home is a really important part of managing your home and also your child’s safety.

Though at first, a pressure gate might not seem like a good idea, they are in fact very strong and effective. Their simple screw in, screw out design makes them portable, so you can move them throughout the house as and when you please.

The screw fittings are designed to minimalize the chance of damaging or marking your walls, and since you are screwing them by hand, the chance of you doing them tight enough to actually damage your walls is minimal too.

Despite this, when you have secured your gate with the pressure mounts, you will find that it is held in place extremely firmly and would take an enormous amount of effort to dislodge. As a result, we can say that yes, pressure gates do work.

Are pressure gates safe?

The most reputable, well-made pressure gates are in fact very safe. Provided that it is a good design, modern pressure baby gates are full of safety features such as anti-child opening handles and self-closing gates, to ensure that your baby is kept safe.

Provided you make sure that you do the pressure mounts up tightly, there is also little chance that the gate will move, unless a huge force is applied to it.

However, pressure baby gates are NOT SUITABLE for TOP OF THE STAIRS USE, without the addition of special screw in wall mounts that will prevent the gate from moving even under extreme pressure.

This is to prevent the gate from giving way should someone trip or fall onto it. Many parents also use the gate to either pull themselves up, or to steady themselves as they climb the stairs, so for this reason the gate needs to be held very firmly in place.

How to install a pressure gate?

Installing a pressure baby gate for your home is a really quick and easy thing to do. Since pressure gates are designed to be screw fastened, all you need to do to install it is to hold it level, in the place you want to hang it, before tightening the screws.

There are a few helpful tips to putting your gate successfully in place.

  • Firstly, with the screws done up, you should check to see that your gate fits where you want to place it. This might sound silly, but many people end up making this mistake.
  • After you have done so, if your gate is designed to be raised, then you should find a few books or something similar to put under the gate to hold it at the height you desire it to be at. (This should not be too high as animals and even baby can get under it). Most gates are designed to be at floor level, so you do not need to do this.
  • Once your gate is in position, gently start doing your screw mounts up until you reach a bite point, then do up the rest, until all the screws are just at the bite point on the wall.
  • Now you should double check your gate is well placed and level to the wall.
  • Once you have, you can do the screw mounts up as tight as possible, using your hands. We recommend double checking them after 20 minutes when the strength has returned to your fingers, to make sure they are as tight as possible.
