Best Retractable Baby Gate

Best Retractable Baby Gate

KOKOPAX TOP PICK

If you are looking for our top choice retractable baby gate, then the result of our tests show that the Retract-A-Gate safety gate is the one you should choose.

We loved how simple and effective this design turned out to be. With one effortless pull of the scratch resistant fabric, you can make a nice secure cordon that neither your baby nor your animals can pass.

The gates fabric is incredibly strong and versatile, so much so that this gate can actually be used outdoors should you want to. It has a really good childproof lock that stops even the most adventurous children from opening it.

The gate does not require winding, and instead retracts all by itself, and wonderfully, does so nice and quietly too. This gate can be used anywhere throughout the house including at the top and bottom of the stairs.

Despite their initial apprehension to the retractable design, our parents were not only won over, but a few liked this retractable baby gate so much, that they said they intended to go out and buy one for their own home.

Why do you need a retractable baby gate for your home?

There comes a time in your home life, when thanks to a new addition to your family, be it a newborn baby, dog or even a cat, that you need to start fencing off certain parts of your home to protect the rest of it, or to make sure your baby is safe.

Over the years, we have read some utter horror stories from days gone by where for example, a mother went off to do something around the house and their baby had escaped its safe area and gotten into some trouble.

In one of the more extreme of these stories, the mother went into the kitchen and began to cook. After a short time she took hold of a pot that burned her hand, forcing her to drop the pot on the floor, where to her sheer horror, her baby had crawled. This horrific accident left the baby with terrible burns to its arms and feet, and is an example of the challenges parent’s face when trying to care for a baby and do household chores.

Fortunately, the addition of a baby gate can easily bring order to your home and prevent these kinds of accidents from occurring. These days, there are many different kinds of baby gates, including ones that have a retractable gate.

The main advantage of having a baby gate with a retractable gate is that it saves the inconvenience of having to go in and out of a gate every time you want to pass. Also, many parents only require a gate that is to be used part of the time, so a retractable gate takes up much less room and therefore is much less of a nuisance than a normal one.

Kokopax Top Choice: Retract-A-Gate safety gate 52″ wide

Retract-A-Gate safety gate 52″ wide Review

In any competition, there always has to be a winner and the Retract-A-Gate safety gate is it.

This well-designed retractable baby gate is not only easy to use, but also proved extremely durable too. Our team of experts purposely set about trying to tear the gate’s fabric, but even after repeated attempts was unable to do so.

This gate is relatively simple to install, though it does require putting screws into walls to hold it tightly in place. Once you have it set up, it will provide you with a long lasting, reliable gate, which lasted so well, that we simply gave up pulling in and out trying to break it.

The fabric itself is anti-scratch, so won’t get damaged even by the most persitant animal, while also being easy to wash should you get it dirty. Its child proof lock was quick and simple for parents to operate, which was also something our parents really loved.

So far as safety is concerned, the gate will withstand enormous pressure before giving way, and several of our experts actually felt it was safer than metal gates, as there were no nasty holes where baby could get its hands stuck.

Cons

  • We found several of our smarter dogs were able to figure out how to get through the gate by forcing their way underneath it.

Dreambaby Retractable Gate

Dreambaby Retractable Gate Review

This retractable gate from Dreambaby can be used both for indoor or outdoor use, making it much loved by our test parents. Several of them admitted to using it to keep the dogs from getting at the BBQ, and were impressed how despite the dogs repeatedly trying, they still were unable to get through.

The design itself is much the same as the Retract-A-Gate design, featuring a durable fabric that can be pulled out and retracted at will. This gate will fit a space up to 55 inches wide, making it suitable for most common passages and doorways.

The main difference we found between the two, and the reason why this superb design had to come in second place, is that the fabric screen is not as see-through as the Retract-A-Gate model. Instead, it is colored black, so reducing visibility, something that concerned our parents a little, as they were not as clearly able to see their baby through it.

That said, this is still a fantastic gate that scored excellently in terms of satisfaction and safety.

Cons:

  • Gate fabric not as see through as Retract-A-Gate design.
  • Instillation instructions were not great.

Evenflo Soft and Wide Gate

Evenflo Soft and Wide Gate ReviewThis is a gate that our experts really loved due to both its simplicity and innovative approach. The design is basically two poles that have screw fastener ends. This means that to install it, you only need to hold the pole in place, before gently twisting the ends until the pole is held tightly in place.

The gate has a see through fabric between the poles that gives you great visibility of your child, while at the same time, letting nothing through. This gate is light, can fit extra wide spaces, requires no tools to setup and leaves no marks after being taken back down, unlike all the other gates on this list.

The main problem with this gate is that it is not as easy to retract as the other designs on this list. In fact, this is the sole reason why this design did not come higher in this list.

Our parents all stated they didn’t feel the design practical, should they want to go in and out of an area rather than simply blocking it off. Despite this, the Evenflo soft and wide gates scored very highly with both our parents and in customer feedback in general.

Cons:

  • You are not able to open and close, but rather must remove the gate to pass through as it is too high to step over too. Ideal for a gate you want up 85% of the time, without needing to pass bank and forth through it regularly.

Evenflo Expansion Swing Wide Gate

Evenflo Expansion Swing Wide Gate Review

Another great approach to the problem of retractable gates, this gate is made from wood and is made to a trellis like design. This means that you are able to pull and push it so that it will compress or expand to suit whatever size gap you need to cover.

It is able to cover gaps from 24 to a whopping 60 inches wide, making it ideal for most passageways that you might need it for. It can be used both indoors and outdoors, and thanks to the trellis like design, won’t allow any of your animals or your baby to get through.

Our parents liked how easy it was to use, being able to open and close it by simply sliding it back and forth, though they did say the small latch, located on the inside of the gate, was a bit of pain to use.

This is another gate which is high in customer satisfaction, and one that we also found to be very strong and reliable.

Cons

  • Not suitable for top of stairs use.
  • The trellis wood design makes this a chewable design, so should your dog be fond of great escapes, we suggest avoiding this design.

Our Final Thoughts

Well, it took us a fair amount of time, but if you are looking for a good quality gate then any of the baby gates that retract, featured on this list will certainly suffice.

If you are looking for a clear winner, then we recommend the Retract-A-Gate safety gate as we found it the best all round retractable gate. We liked its design and ease of installation. This gate never felt like it got in the way like normal gates for babies do.

It was super reliable, always there when you need it, while it quietly rolls itself up when you don’t. Though not as effective for keeping smarter pets out as some of the other designs, we loved its see-through fabric and the fact it has been safety approved for use at the top of the stairs.

Do retractable baby gates really work?

For those parents who are seeking to prevent their baby from escaping their safe area to begin an adventure to some other unsupervised part of the house, but who don’t want to be burdened with a large, obstructive metal or wood framed gate, then a retractable baby gate is the answer.

Though some parents might distrust the idea of a retractable baby gate due to their perceived flimsiness, all modern retractable baby gates are in fact superbly designed and made with strong materials that make them long lasting and very safe for your baby.

When buying a retractable baby gate, be sure to do your research, so that you can be sure you are getting a good quality and effective gate for your child. In general, we recommend buying roll up gates as they are made from strong materials and are the longest lasting.

Are retractable baby gates safe for my baby?

You need to take great care when buying a retractable baby gate to ensure that it has been approved as being safe for your baby.

Since a baby gate suddenly retracting could cause injury to your child in rare cases, or will certainly leave your baby free to access other areas of the house and possibly outside, making sure you buy the best possible baby gate that retracts closed is vital.

How to install a retractable baby gate?

Installing a retractable baby gate is usually a quick and simple process. It does require that you insert drills into your home walls in order to mount the 4 mounting brackets that you need to fasten the gate to the walls.

Though this is a relatively simple process, it will require tools and a confident hand, so if you are missing either of these things, we recommend bringing in an expert to help you to do this. This will prevent you drilling holes all over your lovely walls, and will mean that the gate will be unlikely to fall apart as a result of poor installation too.
