What is a long-range baby monitor?

Modern baby monitors are nothing like those of even a few years ago. Gone are the days of audio-only, crackly, unreliable walkie talkies.

Nowadays, baby monitors feature high-definition video, two-way audio connections, and extensive tilt and zoom features. In some cases, they even some with temperature or heart-rate monitors, so you can be doubly sure your little angel is sleeping well.

Whilst all this technology is really great, some monitors have a major failing – their range. Transmitting high-quality video and audio can sometimes mean that the connection between child and parent unit cuts out.

The monitors we review here do not have those problems. They have been specifically designed to work over extremely long distances.

If you are lucky enough to live in an enormous house, the advantages of this are obvious. If it is a long walk from your bedroom to your child’s, you need to be assured that your baby monitor can transmit over this distance.

For the rest of us, having a long-range monitor has other benefits. If you like to potter in the garden whilst your little one sleeps upstairs, you can be sure that you will still hear them wake.

Equally, if your house has particularly thick walls, these can sometimes block the signal of less powerful monitors.

So if you are looking for a baby monitor with an extreme range, these ones are for you!

How we review

We review by listening to real parents. Nothing can beat their real-life experience of using these products, and when asked they are more than happy to divulge all the features and failings of their purchases!

For this review, we collected and read hundreds of product reviews, and talked to the parents who had written them. Sometimes, what a company sells as a feature can in reality become a major annoyance, something which new parents have enough of. And they tell us about these annoyances, at length.

And so all the reviews below, though written by us, are based on real experiences.

Reviews

Your choice of long-range baby monitor is, of course, yours. If you are thinking about buying one, then it’s really worthwhile shopping around.

The most modern monitors come with a wide range of extra features, some of which are useful, and some less so.

One thing to really look for in a long-range baby monitor is the type of signal it uses nowadays, DECT connections are becoming standard on high-end monitors. This type of connection is crystal-clear, and can be received over incredible ranges.

Beyond this, some monitors come with cameras, and some are audio-only. Video can be great for added piece of mind, but if you just want a quick alert when your little angel wakes up, and audio-only solution could be for you.

So without further ado, here are our favorites!

Editor’s Pick: Samsung SEW-3043W

Samsung SEW-3043W BrightVIEW HD Baby Video Monitoring System IR Night Vision PTZ 5.0 Inch

Samsung is best known for making smart phones and other high-tech products, and this really shows through with this monitor.

The major advantage of this monitor is the video quality. With a full-HD camera and excellent lenses, it looks like you are watching a movie!

The monitor also comes with a dedicated viewing screen, which has a 5-inch screen. The screen is bright and of really high quality.

You can also pan and tilt the camera direct from the viewing screen, which for the parents we talked to really brought out their inner movie director! In fact, some parents even moved the camera out of their children’s bedroom, to capture their first steps or simply make adorable home movies.

And whilst some of these features are now standard on high-quality baby monitors, the real difference with this monitor is the range over which it can operate. Samsung claim a range of up to 900ft, and our testing suggests that this is accurate.

So if you are looking for a high-end baby monitor that can project HD video and audio reliably over long distances, then this is the monitor for you!

Samsung SEW-3043W

Samsung is best known for making smart phones and other high-tech products, and this really shows through with this monitor.

Beyond these features, this monitor has a range of innovative extras which really set it apart from the competition:

Advantages

  • The two-way function on this monitor is excellent. In addition to the fantastic image quality, the microphones and speakers on this product are state of the art. Sometimes, all your baby needs is a few words from you, before they go back to sleep. With this unit, you don’t even need to leave your bed to do that!
  • There is a night light incorporated into the child’s unit, which ensures that your little one will feel secure, and hopefully drift quickly off the sleep! If they are still having trouble, the monitor can be told to sing some pre-programmed lullabies to gently soothe your child. If your singing skills are a little rusty, then this is the monitor for you.
  • The night vision on this monitor is second to none. With a bank of infrared LEDS, it shines an invisible light throughout your infants room. Baby cannot see this light, but the Samsung’s special camera can, and so if your child likes to sleep in a pitch black room, you can still watch them.
  • And then we have the range. It’s little short of incredible that Samsung have managed to fit such powerful transmission equipment into this tiny unit, but they have. You can be in your basement, 3 floors below your sleeping child, and be assured that your connection to them will hold true.

Disadvantages

  • In truth, very few. Some parents we talked to prefer this type of baby monitor to stream directly to their smart phone, but this is a personal preference. In fact, many others said they preferred a dedicated parents’ unit, since their phones were already full of apps, and they didn’t need a new one!

Hello Baby HB24

Hello Baby HB24 Wireless Audio Video

Hello Baby pride themselves on the clarity of their video and audio technology, and this latest offering continues that tradition.

In addition, what sets the HB24 apart from the competition is the intuitive interface. Hello Baby have really thought about what information and functions parents need, and have made these easily available and adjustable.

The sleek design of the monitor means that you will have no problems finding exactly the setting you need, which can be complicated on some other high-tech monitors.

And if you are thinking of adding to your family, the Hello Baby HB24 is a great investment – up to 4 cameras can be used from one monitor, so you can check in all your sleeping children from one handy unit.

Hello Baby HB24

Hello Baby pride themselves on the clarity of their video and audio technology, and this latest offering continues that tradition.

In addition, of course, this monitor comes with a load of extra features:

Advantages

  • Like all the best audio-only baby monitors on the market today, it incorporates excellent cameras, microphones, and speakers. This is immediately obvious as soon as you get the monitor – the image quality is amazing, and the super-clear audio means that you will hear even the smallest snuffle from your child.
  • The battery life of this monitor also set it apart from the competition. It has a special power-saving mode, which conserves batteries but then wakes up when your child does. This means you can get on with other things, safe in the knowledge that your child is asleep, for up to 12 hours on a single charge.
  • The HB24 comes with a temperature monitor, also, a feature which is gradually becoming standard on high-end baby monitors. This thermometer continually monitors the temperature of your little one’s room, and alerts you if it gets too cold or too hot. If it is snowing outside, this saves you those constant trips upstairs to make sure the heating is still on!
  • The range of this monitor is, perhaps, the best of those we tested. If you have an enormous house, do not worry – the signal will stay good up to 960ft away, as long as there are no big barriers in the way! Some parents we talked to even mentioned that the extreme range of this monitor meant that they could go to their neighbors house for coffee, all whilst keeping an eye on their child!

Disadvantages

  • With all the high-tech gadgetry in this monitor, some parents have found that it takes a few days to get used to. Not to worry, though – there are plenty of tutorials online that will allow you to set up and start using the monitor really quickly!

GooDee Video Monitor

GooDee Video Monitor Review

The focus of this monitor is on range – nothing more, nothing less.

Whilst it may lack the high-definition video of some other monitors, the screen is bright and clear, and will easily allow you to see if your little one wakes up. Sometimes all you need is to be alerted!

GooDee say that the monitor will project video and sound over 984ft, a very precise figure that suggests they have really put this monitor through its paces! In our testing, we found the range to be as good as the best baby monitors on the market today.

And with their no-nonsense approach, GooDee have been able to produce a monitor that is admirably small and compact. The build quality here is second to none, and the monitor comes with a 1 year warranty.

GooDee Video Monitor

Whilst it may lack the high-definition video of some other monitors, the screen is bright and clear, and will easily allow you to see if your little one wakes up. Sometimes all you need is to be alerted!

In addition, the Vtech GooDee video monitor comes with a range of other features:

Advantages

  • The image and sound quality of this monitor, whilst not quite up to the standard of some others, is really quite good. You can easily see what is going on in your child’s room.
  • The night-vision functions of this monitor are equally solid. A ring of infrared LED bulbs give out a light which is invisible to your child, but not to the special camera, so even if all the lights are out you will still be able to see your little one!
  • The long battery life of this monitor is also great. When unused for a while, it automatically enters a power-saving mode, where the batteries will last for 8 hours. Don’t worry, though – if your child wakes up and starts to cry, the monitor will automatically wake up, and alert you.
  • Go out in the yard, down to the basement, next door – it doesn’t matter with this monitor. Outside, and with a direct line of site, it will transmit image and video over and incredible 984 feet. This is perfect if you want to do a little gardening, or are lucky enough to live in an enormous house!

Disadvantages

  • Let’s face it, the GooDee monitor is not the prettiest object! If you are looking for sleek design and the latest, stylish colors, this may not be the product for you. If, like most people, you just want a solidly performing monitor with a super-long range, then you can do worse than this monitor.

Samsung Secured Digital Audio

Samsung Secured Digital Audio ReviewIn short, a solid performer, but without some of the extra features that would make it stand out from the crowd.

In many ways, Samsung have gone back to basics with the design of this monitor. Instead of HD video, this monitor focuses on capturing high-quality sound, and transmitting it over incredible distances.

The latest DECT transmission technology offers interference-free, crystal-clear sound. Using this, the monitor is able to cut out all the white noise that older monitors suffered from.

Samsung Secured Digital Audio

Samsung have gone back to basics with the design of this monitor. Instead of HD video, this monitor focuses on capturing high-quality sound, and transmitting it over incredible distances.

An of course, there are other advantages to the no-nonsense design of this monitor:

Advantages

  • The quick set up of this monitor means that you will be using it minutes after it arrives. The simple approach here is great – this monitor does precisely what it is designed to do, with no hassle.
  • The alerts on this monitor are similarly straightforward. It will tell you if you are out of range, or if the sound reaches a particular level. Sometimes, all you need is to be alerted to your child waking, so you can go and see them!
  • The range, like all the monitors we are reviewing here, is great. Parents we have talked to raved about the distances achieved by this monitor. Perhaps it is the sleek design, ore some special aerial, we don’t know – all we do know is that you can be at the bottom of your garden, and still hear your little angel!
  • Lastly, and perhaps most importantly for some of you, the monitor looks great! The sleek design means that it can sit on your desk or kitchen table without affecting your carefully-designed décor, and perhaps even complementing it!

Disadvantages

  • What this monitor does, it does well. But with no video, some may find it lacking. If you want a no-nonsense audio-only monitor that is quick and easy to set up, and looks great, then this is the one for you. If you want high-tech features, look elsewhere.

Our Final Thoughts

So which to choose?

It goes without saying that we recommend getting a long-range baby monitor, even if your house is smaller than you think you deserve!

In even the smallest houses, particularly thick walls or mysterious blind spots can defeat other monitors, and leave you concerned that you will miss your child waking up. With these monitors, there should be no such trouble.

The choice, of course, is yours. But, after listening to endless hours of babies sleeping, and singing lots of lullabies into monitors, we would say that the Samsung SEW-3043W is the one to go for.

No other monitor offers the value of this one – packed into its compact body are excellent microphones and speakers, along with a wide range of extra features that really set it apart from the competition.

But, most importantly, it does all this over an incredible range.

The choice, of course, is yours, but if you are looking for the best combination of features and value, this is the one to go for.
