What is a night vision baby monitor?

Baby monitors have come a long way in the past few years. Gone are the days of audio-only monitors, whose crackly sound and unreliable connections made watching over your baby something of a chore.

The most modern monitors come with HD cameras, and display units with high-resolution screens, so you can see every detail of your little one’s daily naps. They also incorporate extensive pan and tilt features, and some of the parents we talked to for this review found that these really brought out their inner movie director!

The most recent advance in this type of monitor has been the addition of night vision. These monitors take a technology originally developed for surveillance systems – infrared cameras – and use it to allow you to watch over your little angel even in pitch darkness!

They work by emitting an infrared light which is invisible to you and your child, but can be  picked up by a special camera. These monitors can be especially useful if your child is a fussy sleeper, and prefers their bedroom to be very dark – you can turn all the lights out, and still be assured that you can watch over them!

How we review

We review by listening to real parents. Nothing can beat their real-life experience of using these products, and when asked they are more than happy to divulge all the features and failings of their purchases!

For this review, we collected and read hundreds of product reviews, and talked to the parents who had written them. Sometimes, what a company sells as a feature can in reality become a major annoyance, something which new parents have enough of. And they tell us about these annoyances, at length.

And so all the reviews below, though written by us, are based on real experiences.

Night Vision Monitor Reviews

Of course, your choice of night vision monitor is up to you. Each of the products we reviewed comes with different features and a mix of abilities.

One thing to look for, though, is the image quality of the monitor. Whilst some monitors have excellent visual quality in daylight, as soon as the light dims this can really suffer.

We don’t pretend to understand the science behind these monitors, but it became clear as we tested them that some monitors were able to perform in absolute darkness much better than others!

Beyond these basic differences, each monitor comes with its own features and drawbacks.

So without further ado, here are our favorites!

Editor’s Pick: Hello Baby HB24

Hello Baby HB24 Wireless Audio Video

This monitor really comes into its own in the dark! Of the monitors we tested, the image quality of this one, when operating in the night vision mode, really stood out.

Quite simply, in terms of overall design and capabilities, this is the best night vision baby monitor on the market today.

This is due not only to the great quality of the lenses and cameras used in the product, but also the connection systems that it uses. A common problem with video baby monitors is signal dropouts and unreliable connections. Whatever advanced science Hello Baby have packed into this new monitor, it certainly solves that problem!

Beyond this, the parents we talked to praised the sleek design of this monitor. The camera is compact, and easy to set up. The parent’s unit is a joy to use, being small enough to carry around and providing all the relevant information and features at the touch of a button.

Hello Baby HB24

Whilst our focus here is on night vision capability, the extra features this monitor comes with mean that it is a great all-round performer, and ranks among the best baby monitors in terms of value.

Whilst our focus here is on night vision capability, the extra features this monitor comes with mean that it is a great all-round performer, and ranks among the best baby monitors in terms of value.

In addition, this monitor has a number of other advantages:

Advantages

  • The battery life, which is always a concern when buying a product with these kinds of advanced features, is great. The monitor automatically enters into an energy saving mode if not used for a while, and in this mode it will keep going for up to 12 hours. Even if you leave the screen on, staring lovingly at your little one sleeping, the battery will last up to 8 hours.
  • The Hello Baby HB24 is also expandable. The basic unit comes with one camera and a viewing unit, but up to 4 extra cameras can be added. This is perfect if you have (or plan to have!) more than one child, allowing you to watch over all of them from one unit. The intuitive interface used in this monitor makes setting up these extra cameras a breeze, so even the most techno-phobe parents will be able to manage it!
  • The range of extra features on this monitor is truly outstanding. Like the best baby monitors, it features a crisp, clear, two-way audio feature, allowing you to talk to soothe your little one back to sleep. It also has extensive zoom, pan, and tilt features, which mean that you are easily able to get the best shot of your child’s nap!
  • But, for our purposes, what really stands out here is the quality of the night vision. The image, even in the pitch dark, stays bright and clear, and the advanced connection technology used here means that the signal is really reliable.
  • The monitor also comes with a one year warranty, so in the unlikely event you are unhappy with it, you can return it.

Disadvantages

  • In truth, very few. The value represented by this unit, with its excellent sound and picture quality, raft of extra features, and sleek design, means that it easily represents the best value of the baby monitors we reviewed.

VTech VM321-2

VTech VM321-2

This monitor has been around for a few years now, but remains a favorite of parents due to its robust design and excellent night vision features.

The approach taken to this monitor stresses ease of use above all else. The product is easy to set up, a joy to use, and easily expandable.

In fact, amongst the parents we talked to, the way in which this monitor system can be easily extended was one of its best features. When buying the monitor, you can choose the number of cameras and viewing units you want, which is perfect if your twins have just arrived!

And when your child’s little brother or sister comes along, you can easily buy extra cameras, and quickly connect them to your existing monitor.

VTech VM321-2

The approach taken to this monitor stresses ease of use above all else. The product is easy to set up, a joy to use, and easily expandable.

The slim design of the cameras on this monitor is also great, allowing them to be nestled on a bedside table, or even mounted to the wall if you so desire!

In addition, of course, this monitor comes with a load of extra features:

Advantages

  • The battery life on this monitor is great. With this type of baby monitor, which offers a range of advanced features, this can sometimes be an annoyance. However, the parents we talked to reported no problems with the monitor losing power.
  • The resolution of the camera and screens used here is great, delivering high quality video which is a joy to watch, even if your baby is doing nothing but sleep!
  • And when you dim the lights, the monitor continues to deliver great quality video. One of the best features of this VTech monitor is that it automatically detects light levels, and switched to IR mode if it needs to. This means one less thing to worry about for you!
  • The temperature monitor incorporated into this unit is an innovative feature, also. It monitors the temperature in your child’s room, and can be told to alert you if this rises or falls above or below a defined range.

Disadvantages

  • This is a serious contender for the best night vision baby monitor, and has very few disadvantages. The only slight gripe our reviewers noted was that the picture quality here, whilst very good, was not up to the standard of the best monitors on the market today.

Wansview 1080P Q1

Editor’s Pick: Wansview 1080P Q1

This camera offers the highest resolution of any such camera we have seen, incorporates many other state of the art features, and manages to do all this within a sleek, compact device.

The thing that really stands out here is the resolution. This is the only device we tested which can take and record video in true HD – up to 1920×1080 pixels. Many parents, in fact, felt that images of this quality were wasted when the camera was just used in their baby’s bedroom, and said that the moved the camera around to capture their child’s first steps or adorable eating habits!

Another great feature of this camera is its adaptability. Wansview have extensively tested the camera with a range of different systems and hardware, and the camera is quick and easy to set up no matter if you have a smart phone, mac or PC. None of the parents we spoke to had any problems with this camera, which on its own sets it apart from the competition!

Wansview 1080P Q1

This camera offers the highest resolution of any such camera we have seen, incorporates many other state of the art features, and manages to do all this within a sleek, compact device.

Of course, in addition to the basics, this camera comes with a wide range of other features:

Advantages

  • The pan and tilt functions are this camera are really state of the art. It offers a full 340 degrees of pan, allowing the camera to swivel almost all the way around on its mount. The 90 degree vertical tilt is equally as impressive, and allows the camera to see almost everything that is happening in your child’s room.
  • The camera also has a 4x digital zoom. Most parents we talked used this feature quite often – being able to get a really close-up view of your little one whilst they are sleeping gave them great peace of mind, and also allowed them to show their angel off to their friends even whilst they were asleep!
  • The two-way audio on this device are also excellent – the sound is clean, clear, and crisp. When used as a baby monitor, this has great advantages, because half the time all baby needs to fall back asleep is to hear a parents voice!
  • The night vision is equally excellent, with a great range and excellent quality even when the ambient light is extremely dim.
  • And again, that resolution. No other camera we reviewed offers the image clarity that this one does. Even in dim light, the picture is sharp and bright, and when combined with the pan and tilt features of this camera, means that it will really bring out your inner movie director!

Disadvantages

  • In truth, very few. In fact, the only problem we can see with this camera is that your friends will start to envy all the high-definition movies you are posting to facebook!

LeFun Wireless Baby Monitor

Lefun Wireless/Wired WiFi Cloud IP Surveillance Camera 720pDon’t let the name of this device fool you – it is a serious contender for the best IP camera for monitoring your child.

LeFun have been developing cameras like this for some years now, and this really shows through in the design of this device. In fact, though primarily designed as a baby monitor, it matches the best surveillance cameras.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of this camera is the fact that the same camera feed can be monitored by multiple devices at the same time. What this means is that you are able to see your little one sleeping from your phone, your PC, and your tablet all at once!

You can even give the password to your mother-in-law, so that she can watch her little angel sleeping all day long.

The two-way audio on this camera also sets it apart. Whilst some of the microphone and speaker set-ups in cameras like this can sound harsh, the sound quality here is soothing and calming. Sometimes, all your child needs is to hear your voice, and they will go back to sleep. With this camera, you can be sure of that!

LeFun Wireless Baby Monitor

LeFun have been developing cameras like this for some years now, and this really shows through in the design of this device. In fact, though primarily designed as a baby monitor, it matches the best surveillance cameras.

The LeFun Wireless Camera, of course, comes with all the features you would expect:

Advantages

  • LeFun have kindly considered those of us who are not so good with technology! The ease with which this camera can be set up is quite extraordinary.
  • This camera also takes your security seriously, featuring financial-level Encryption on the video feed, so you can assured that your videos will stay private.
  • The pan and tilt features of this camera match those of the best surveillance cameras. The camera will swivel a full 350 degrees, meaning that you can see everything that is going on in your child’s room. This is also ideal if you have multiple children, as you can easily set up one camera to look over them both, and simply pan and tilt it for the best view.
  • The resolution offered by this camera, at 720 P, is not quite as high as some of it’s competitors, but the excellent lenses used in this camera go some way to making up for this. The picture is bright and sharp even in dim light – you may never have realised just how cute your little one looks when they are sleeping!

Disadvantages

  • This is a really solid performer, and delivers everything you would expect a modern monitor to do. The only disadvantage that we can see, and the only reason why this camera did not win our test today, is that the resolution offered by it is not the best. If resolution is important to you, look elsewhere. If not, then this is the camera for you!

Our Final Thoughts

So which to choose?

It goes without saying that we, along with medical professionals, recommend getting a high quality baby monitor with night vision, at least for your baby’s first year.

Whilst they can never replace your vigilance, with our hectic modern lives it is difficult to watch over your child 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Night vision cameras like these are an excellent choice, because they allow you to monitor your child even in dim light.

They can be especially useful if your little one is a grouchy sleeper, and requires absolute darkness in order to drift off. With this kind of monitor, you can be sure that even in the dimmest light you will still be able to see your little angel.

If you want a night vision camera to look over your child, we recommend the Hello Baby HB24. No other camera we reviewed offered such great image quality, and raft of extra features, in such a compact design.

No other camera here offers the value of this one, and – if you care about such things – looks so good as well!

The choice, of course, is yours, but if you are looking for the best combination of features and value, this is the one to go for.
