After reading 493 product reviews and watching hours of babies sleeping, we can say that the Infant Optics DXR-8 wifi baby monitor is definitely, conclusively, positively the best. No other camera on the market offers such a mix of tilt and pan features, ease of use, and high quality video. If you are looking for a baby monitor that will allow you to see every little detail of your little one’s naps, and even bring out your inner movie director, then this is the one for you. The value represented by this small device easily sets it apart from the competition.

What is a Wifi baby monitor?

Gone are the days of crackling, walkie-talkie baby monitors. The best baby monitors of today offer high-quality video and perfect, two-way sound reproduction.

Wifi monitors are a few years old now, but were revolutionary when they came out. Using your existing Wifi network, they stream live video and sound, typically to a designated app on your smart phone.

The advantages are obvious. Using the internet means that you can watch your baby sleeping from anywhere. If you go out for your ‘date night’, and find the movie boring, you can easily watch your little one nap instead!

And with the high-quality video produced by the latest cameras, many parents find that they are perfect for making home movies. No longer does the baby monitor have to stay in the bedroom – now you can really annoy your Facebook friends by making professional videos of every moment of your kids life!

How we review

We review by listening to real parents. Nothing can beat their real-life experience of using these products, and when asked they are more than happy to divulge all the features and failings of their purchases!

For this review, we collected and read hundreds of product reviews, and talked to the parents who had written them. Sometimes, what a company sells as a feature can in reality become a major annoyance, something which new parents have enough of. And they tell us about these annoyances, at length.

And so all the reviews below, though written by us, are based on real experiences.

Reviews

Your choice of wifi baby monitor is, of course, yours. If you are thinking about buying one, then it’s really worthwhile shopping around.

The most modern monitors come with a wide range of extra features, some of which are useful, and some less so.

And then there is the question of resolution. Whilst you may not think that having HD quality video just to watch your kid sleep is important, trust us, after a few minutes of watching that little screen, it is worth the investment.

There is nothing quite like the security of knowing that you can check on your child anytime, anywhere, and for this reason alone wifi baby monitors come highly recommended.

So without further ado, here are our favorites!

Editor’s Pick: Infant Optics DXR-8

Infant Optics DXR-8 Baby Monitor – Infant OpticsWow. We’ve seen a lot of advanced baby monitors come out in the last few years, but the DXR-8 raises the bar for what is possible.

The experience starts as soon as you take it out of the box. Unlike other monitors, this one comes with a dedicated viewing device, rather than using your smartphone screen. What this means is that you never have to worry about connection problems again.

And then there is the lens. If you are looking for the best image quality on the market, then this is absolutely the monitor for you. It is the first ever monitor to come with interchangeable lenses.

Infant Optics DXR-8

We’ve seen a lot of advanced baby monitors come out in the last few years, but the DXR-8 raises the bar for what is possible.

Apart from all this, the monitor boasts loads of extra features:

Advantages

  • The dedicated viewing monitor has a sleek full color LCD Display of the highest quality. It is so good you will find yourself distracted by it, which might help with breaking that NetFlix habit!
  • The long battery life means that you can let your little one sleep to their heart’s content, without worrying about the camera cutting out.
  • The tilt and pan capability of this monitor is also really special, and the dedicated viewing screen makes all these actions easy to use.
  • And again, those lenses. The standard monitor comes with an optical zoom lens, but a wide angle lens can be purchased separately. If you are looking for a monitor to really bring out your inner movie director, then this is the one for you!

Disadvantages

  • Well, from speaking to parents the only disadvantage we can see here is that your Facebook friends might grow tired of your panning, zooming, wide-angle movies of your little one sleeping!

LeFun Wireless Camera, HD 720P

Lefun Wireless/Wired WiFi Cloud IP Surveillance Camera 720pThe name of this excellent camera, promising fun for both you and your child, doesn’t mean it’s not a serious contender! It is one of the most popular wifi baby cameras on the market, and it is not hard to see why.

Perhaps the biggest difference you will notice with this camera is the high quality resolution it offers. The camera can make and record videos at up to 720p, and is paired with excellent lenses and zoom functions.

In fact, the image quality on this monitor is so good, we’ve even heard of parents taking it out of their kid’s bedroom, to record their first steps!

So if you are looking for the best image quality, then this is the monitor for you!

LeFun Wireless Camera, HD 720P

The name of this excellent camera, promising fun for both you and your child, doesn’t mean it’s not a serious contender! It is one of the most popular wifi baby cameras on the market, and it is not hard to see why.

It comes with a whole raft of other features, of course:

Advantages

  • Wifi connection across multiple devices. If you want to be able to see your kid on all your devices, then the multiple user feature on this monitor is really handy. You can even give the password to your babysitter, or your mother-in-law, when they come round for babysitting duties!
  • The two-way audio on this monitor is excellent, so you can easily hear your baby, or let him or her here your voice. If you sometimes just need to coo at your little one to get them to go back to sleep, this is perfect.
  • Smart phone alerts are also possible. The high-tech circuitry within the monitor means that it will automatically pick up when your child is restless, and send you a notification. If you want to be alerted to any problems when you are sleeping, then this is a very useful feature!
  • The security on the camera is second-to-none. LeFun have included Financial Level Encryption, so you can connect as many devices as you like, and not have to worry about your data being stolen. Those cute videos of your little one sleeping will be just for you, until you post them on Facebook for the world to see!
  • It’s easy to setup, and the app can be downloaded and ready to use in minutes.
  • One of the best things about the Lefun is its wide scope, it provides a view of the entire room your little one is sleeping in. You can control the camera by remote to move horizontally up to 350 degrees and tilt to 100 degrees.
  • It also comes with a 720p high resolution lens and automatic zoom, giving a crystal clear image on your smart phone, tablet, or PC.
  • The LeFun features an SD card slot, allowing you to record and play back hours of captured footage. Everything recorded on your SD card is separate from the internet and secure – beyond breaking into your house, there is absolutely no way for strangers to access content on the SD card.
  • It has a built in microphone and speaker – a feature that’ll come in handy when baby starts to recognise mom and dad’s voice.
  • The camera can be accessed by multiple devices using a password-secure identity. Financial-level encryption technology makes it incredibly difficult for any unwanted eyes to hack into your camera.
  • IR LED night vision up to 32 feet, provides a clear image even in a dark room.

Disadvantages

  • Let’s face it, this is not the prettiest baby monitor on the market! It’s bulbous head and LED lights mean that it look a little bit dorky, but I guess LeFun were focusing on packing all that camera equipment in, and can be forgiven for forgetting to make it stylish!

And with this camera having been developed by moms themselves, you can be sure that it has had many hours of testing.

Advantages

  • A full 350 degrees of pan means that there is no hiding place! In fact, the range of tilt and pan features on this camera, all controlled via the smart phone app, will make you feel like a movie director.
  • Whilst some other cameras rely on the ‘cloud’, the ComfortCam Pro HD streams directly to your device. This can really make a difference in reliability – no more frantically re-setting the wifi router!
  • The ultra sensitive microphone on this monitor is one of the best on the market, so you can hear all those delightful coos and snores in perfect detail, and even sing your little one to sleep if you like!
  • The infrared lights mounted on the front of the camera give it excellent night vision, so even if your child likes to sleep in pitch darkness, they will not escape your loving gaze.

Disadvantages

  • The small size of this monitor makes it look a little fragile, and some people have said that it can be easy to knock over. Without wanting to sound mean to those particular parents, we think that this might be a problem with their co-ordination, and not the camera!

Snug Baby Monitor v2

nug Baby Monitor V2 - WiFi Video Camera With Audio For IPhone/Samsung

In short, a solid performer, but without the advanced features that you should expect from a brand new baby monitor.

The Snug v2 does all that you would expect from a baby monitor today, however, and it does it well. The free app is available for both iPhone and Android, and is easy to set up and use.

The motion and audio detection is also great, and highly sensitive. And of course, as with all wifi monitors, you can use the app to watch your little one from anywhere, so even if you are out all day at work, you can easily check in on your child!

Snug Baby Monitor v2

The Snug v2 does all that you would expect from a baby monitor today, however, and it does it well. The free app is available for both iPhone and Android, and is easy to set up and use.

Advantages

  • The quick set up of this monitor means that you will be using it minutes after it arrives. The no-nonsense approach here is great – this monitor does precisely what it is designed to do, with no hassle.
  • The alarms, triggered when your child wakes up, are also great, and work even when the app is not running. This means you can rest assured that you will definitely know if your little on is awake, even if you are distracted.
  • The night vision on this monitor is also solid. It might not have the resolution of some of its competitors, but the camera feed is bright and easy to see.
  • And, unlike many monitors in this price bracket, you can connect several devices. Give the password to your mother-in-law, and they can spend all day watching their adored grandchild sleep!

Disadvantages

  • What this monitor does, it does well. If you are looking for a solid, easy to use monitor that requires minimal set up, then this is the one for you. However, if you want to take advantage of the advanced features just coming onto the market, it might be worth looking elsewhere.

Nest Cam Indoor Security Camera

Nest Cam indoor security camera review

This product wasn’t specifically designed to be a baby monitor, but it shares all the features of the best baby monitors available on today’s market. The Nest Cam is a high-quality indoor surveillance camera that relays video to an app on your phone.

Nest Cam Indoor Security Camera

The Nest Cam is a high-quality indoor surveillance camera that relays video to an app on your phone.

  • The Nest Cam’s sleek design is an immediate eye-catcher. It comes with a robust, magnetic stand and a wall mount, so you can install it anywhere in the house.
  • It is also very user-friendly and easy to setup – just plug in the camera and download an app. The entire device can be controlled remotely from your phone no matter where you are.
  • The camera live streams video up to 1080p over a secure network. Boasting security measures as strong as those used by banks, parents can feel at ease about privacy in their home.
  • Another feature we liked is the in-built microphone and speaker, which allows you to listen to in on and talk to your baby.
  • The Nest Cam can detect movement and send a quick alert to your phone or a snapshot to your email. You can get a recorded history of your camera’s footage, but be warned: a subscription fee is required.
  • With a Nest Aware subscription you can get access a number of decent features, including a video history and social network sharing capabilities. It’s unfortunate that there is a fee attached to these features, but well worth it if you choose to opt in.

Cons

  • The camera needs stable bandwidth to maintain 1080p HD, otherwise it drops to a lower video quality. Even the best internet connection can have laggy moments, so this is a bit of a concern for those seeking the high-definition visual quality.
  • As a top of the range WiFi camera, it comes at a higher price. This doesn’t include a monthly subscription fee, which is required to unlock all of the camera’s features.

Things we liked

  • Easy first-time setup
  • Brilliantly designed to be set up on any surface
  • Live streaming & powerful security
  • Microphone and speaker for two-way communication

Things we didn’t like

  • 1080p resolution requires excellent WiFi connection
  • Expensive

WiFi Baby 3

WiFi Baby 3, Wireless Smartphone Baby Monitor Review

The WiFi Baby 3 is a small, cute camera that can be placed on a shelf or wall mount to blend inconspicuously into your baby’s room.

WiFi Baby 3

The WiFi Baby 3 is a small, cute camera that can be placed on a shelf or wall mount to blend inconspicuously into your baby’s room.

  • A strong feature of the WiFi Baby is that it uses a LAN (Local Area Network) to connect the camera to your device when at home – this makes it considerably more secure than using an internet connection. When you are out and about, you can access the camera via a web browser on your smart device by using a password-secure URL.
  • Powerful infrared up to 30 feet allows you to see what’s going on even in the middle of the night.
  • Another feature we liked is that you can adjust the audio sensitivity and block out white noise. This is great if you’re using white noise because, even if your baby appreciates it, that buzzing can get annoying pretty quickly.
  • For added convenience, the app allows you to multitask and keep only the audio playing in the background. This means you can do browse other stuff on your phone and keep an ear out for problems.

Cons

  • The WiFi Baby’s biggest let down is that it has poor camera resolution (640×480). It is difficult to get a clear image unless the camera is set up very close.
  • There is no power button, forcing you to unplug the device when you don’t want to use it. LeFun Wireless Camera

  • It can be set up in less than a minute, requiring only a power cord and a connection to your Android or iOS device.

  • Another outstanding detail is the monitor allows you to play lullabies and bed time stories. You can even connect to your iTunes library.

Cons

  • It requires a very fast and stable WiFi connection to function perfectly, which may mean upgrading your internet connection to accommodate it.
  • It works best on iOS devices and can be glitchy for Android users.
  • Despite its 360 degree rotation, it doesn’t tilt down very far. Making it a bit more of a tricky task to find the right place to set up your camera.
  • The iBaby is one of the more expensive monitors on our list.

Things we liked

  • 1080p HD camera quality and 360 degrees view

  • Free access to Amazon cloud storage
  • Plays lullabies and bed time stories

Our Final Thoughts.

So, decisions decisions.

We really recommend wifi baby monitors in general, of course – there is nothing quite like the feeling of security you get from being able to look at your loved one from anywhere, anytime.

Beyond that, our recommendation would be to go for a monitor that offers the best image quality, and the best tilt and zoom functions. Not only will you have fun for the first few hours, making and recording your own movies, but in the long run these monitors pay for themselves.

That’s why we’ve gone for the Infant Optics DXR-8. It has excellent image quality, tilt and pan functions, and the fact that you can change lenses will be sure to result in sharp, crisp home videos, even if your little one sleeps through them!
