Best Lightweight Stroller

Top-Best-Lightweight-Strollers

KOKOPAX TOP PICK

Our fun is over, no more running all over the countryside pushing strollers; it’s time to finally announce the Summer Infant 3Dlite Convenience Stroller as the winner of our top lightweight stroller.

This is the king of the lightweight stroller. It is light, but very strong and sturdy. It has a large and comfortable seat that our baby’s really loved sitting in. The seat can be reclined to an impressive 4 different positions to maximize baby’s comfort, while it’s well-padded, 5 point safety harness really did keep baby safely in place.

It has great brakes and the front wheels feature an effective anti-shock design that really does help take the sting out of all those bumps. This was something that our babies really seemed to appreciate as they continued to sleep deeply, with their usual amount of drool running all down them.

Our parents voted this as their all-round favorite, many of whom left saying it was the very first item on their next shopping list. Our team of experts agreed, hastening to add that it impressed them by its performance as much as most other non-lightweight best baby strollers.

Things to remember when shopping for your top lightweight stroller

You will really thank yourself on those long distance trips, or when flying overseas for buying a lightweight stroller. Anyone who is reading this because they already have bought a normal buggy, will be remembering the last trip that finally convinced them to buy a lightweight one and shaking their head in agreement.

A lightweight stroller is one that has been designed specifically to keep the weight to 15 pounds and under, though some lightweight strollers do go up to 25 pounds. The main advantages of these lightweight strollers are as follows:

  • Easier to maneuver (Ideal for older or more frail people)
  • Easier to get in and out of the car and to carry.
  • Cost less in luggage when flying for example.
  • Generally easier to fold away and store as less bulky.

If you are buying your stroller for a newborn, then you need to take care to find one that has seat capable of being able to recline, so that the baby can lie flat. This is not a common option as the recline feature adds weight to the buggy and therefore has not been included in many designs.

Some lightweight designs do have a travel seat that is designed to detach and fit into your car. This is quite a rare feature as again it adds weight. You should also keep a look out for whether the stroller has a canopy for protecting your baby from the rain and the sun.

In general we advise you to first decide what you want the stroller for, since lightweight designs are more frail and won’t stand up to the punishment a normal one will, we recommend deciding how much you intend to use it and buying accordingly.

How we review

We spend hours upon hours testing and retesting the many hundreds of products that we review every month. For this article we reviewed 46 different models of lightweight baby strollers alone!

We run thorough and extensive tests on every item based on our own, unique testing program. We are very proud of this program, which we have developed over a number of years to ensure we give each of our products a fair, scientific analysis to make sure we are able to only pick the best ones to review.

Though we do admit to substituting our real babies for water melons during our extensive crash and impact tests, we gain a majority of our feedback from our volunteer test parents and their babies.

No babies were harmed during these tests, though one of our team of experts did fall down an embankment and twist his ankle while we were conducting our cross country lightweight stroller race. Don’t worry; he is back in work having made a full recovery, though he now never shuts up about his ‘accident’.

Kokopax Top Choice: Summer Infant 3Dlite Convenience Stroller

Summer Infant 3Dlite Convenience Stroller Review

Though this is in no way on what we base our reviews, after testing this top buggy from Summer Infant, there is little wonder as to why it is Amazon’s top selling lightweight stroller.

It is extremely sturdy and well built, something that might account for it being slightly heavier than many of the other strollers on this list. Coming in at 12 pounds, it features a strong, but lightweight aluminum frame, which easily folds down into a compact, easy to carry and store stroller. You can do this in 3 simple stages, before then carrying it around with the travel strap.

Our parents said this was their favorite design of the lot, they found it easy to maneuver and push along, while they loved how much storage it offered, including its cup holder on the handle bars. It allows you to put baby in 4 different reclined seating positions, which means that it can be used for newborns too.

From the safety point of view, our team found it to be the best of the bunch. The stroller’s brakes are great, while its padded 5 point seat harness kept baby in position, even during some quite severe impacts.

For baby the seat is nice and comfortable, while the anti-shock front wheels really did smooth out the ride, meaning many uninterrupted hours of sleep for baby while mum and dad did whatever they needed to do.

Cons:

  • At 15.9 pounds a little heavier than others on this list.

UPPAbaby G-LITE Stroller, Jake

UPPAbaby G-LITE Stroller, Jake ReviewThis stroller was a surprise hit with our parents. Its mesh designed seat was an unknown as far as we were concerned and could have easily been something that our parents didn’t like. But they almost all loved it.

Though it is not removable, the mesh is surprisingly comfortable and makes the seat very breathable, making it ideal for those hot summer days. It is also made of a fabric that is designed to be easily removable and then machine washable. This was something our parents all really agreed was very helpful indeed.

Not scoring as highly on safety as the Summer Infant design, this design is more simple, something that perhaps accounts for why this buggy is lighter too.

It is nice and maneuverable, but doesn’t feel as study as the previous stroller. Our team of experts certainly felt it would not last as long as the Summer Infant design.

This is an ideal buggy for light use, such as short trips to the shops, or for the occasional holiday, as it is a generally good all round lightweight stroller and easy to carry. We don’t recommend it for heavier duties such as long everyday trips or cross country as it might not be up to the task.

  • Not as sturdy as other designs, more liable to break with heavy use in our opinion.

Maclaren Quest

Maclaren Quest Review

Maclaren are perhaps the most famous brand as far as baby buggy’s go, so it’s little surprise that one of their buggy’s make it to this list. We always find that Maclaren strollers are the neatest and somehow most attractive buggies on the market. This one is no different.

It features a nice and simple design, which thanks its 4 positions reclining seat is suitable for newborns to children of up to 55 pounds. Available in several colors, this is another very lightweight and easy to use stroller that comes with an excellent canopy and rain cover too.

We personally like that Maclaren offer the chance to order replacement parts, which allows you a much cheaper way to continue using your stroller when it breaks, without meaning you have to buy a new one. This is a service unique to Maclaren, and is something lots of parents love them for.

Cons:

  • Sunshade could do with being longer as it didn’t cover all of our babies.
  • We did notice squeaking from several of these strollers’ wheels after extended use.

Inglesina USA Net Stroller

Inglesina USA Net Stroller Review

Quite honestly, if this stroller had a 4 seat recline instead of only 2, and if the handle was a little bit higher or adjustable, this baby buggy would have come much higher on this list. Otherwise it is a superb lightweight stroller, and is excellent value for money.

Our parents all said how easy it was to pack away and carry with its travel strap. The stand was a nice feature, but one that our parents said wasn’t something they were bothered about.

Another design that features an easy to remove, machine washable mesh seat, which again scored highly with parents and babies alike

Easy to pack away and transport, this sturdy lightweight baby stroller is simply too good to beat.

What is the difference between a lightweight stroller and a normal one?

Well, obviously the main difference between a lightweight stroller and a normal everyday stroller is that the lightweight one is designed to be lighter.

There are a few reasons why someone might want a lighter stroller, firstly it is a lot easier to carry and pack and unpack from your car, for example. If you plan to travel by plane, a lightweight stroller can save you money on excess baggage fees too.

Another group of people who might want a lightweight stroller are the elderly, who will find it a lot easier to maneuver a lightweight stroller on any trips they might make with their grandchild.

Lightweight strollers are made from lighter materials such as aluminum and generally feature less extras compared to normal ones. They might also be smaller and as a result of trying to save weight, but can be less sturdy also.

Are lightweight strollers safe?

Yes. Though designed to be lightweight, manufacturers are still required to design and produce strollers that comply with western government’s strict safety regulations. All the baby products that you can buy from reputable stores must have received a safety certificate from their respective government safety organization.

Any stroller made by a reputable baby brand will be made of high quality materials and be totally safe for your child. If you are not sure as to whether or not the stroller you are interested in is well made, we recommend that you do your research and read plenty of customer feedback sites relating to that particular product.

Do lightweight strollers last as long as normal ones?

Well, that is a difficult question. Lightweight strollers are made with weight in mind, and in order to reduce that weight, the designers reduce the amount of materials that they use in the design. They also use lightweight metals such as aluminum instead of steal, all of which tend to mean that the stroller is less strong and therefore more likely to break.

Whether or not your stroller lasts a long time really comes down how much you use it and how much you take care of it. Using your lightweight stroller to carry your heavy shopping as well as your baby for example, will increase the chance of it breaking.

We would suggest that you use your stroller as intended, and try to take good care of it. You should always clean and dry it after it has for example, been in the muddy park and gotten wet and dirty. This will ensure that your stroller lasts as long as possible.
