After reading hundreds of reviews, talking to over a dozen parents, and watching countless children scooting about on their toys, we can confidently say that the VTech Sit-to-Stand Alphabet Train is our top choice. No other combination of ride-on and walker has so much entertainment crammed into one toy. It can provide fun learning activities for children from a range of ages. The value represented by this toy truly sets it apart from the competition.

What is a ride-on walker?

There are a variety of products on the market that are specifically designed to help children with learning how to walk.

Some parents dislike the idea of the traditional seated baby walker, preferring walkers that allow children to stand freely. Often the latter kind of walker – usually referred to as a push walker – prove to be better for early development.

In the past, push walkers were very simple: featuring a pair of wheels on a base and something for the baby to grab onto. Toddlers could then begin to take their first faltering steps by pushing the toy forwards.

Today’s walkers are getting more and more elaborate, although the basic concept is the same, we now have the baby push walker and ride-on combination.

These toys can be used to help children get on their feet and learning to walk, then when they are ready they can be sat upon and used as riding toys.

There’s a huge selection of this kind of toy out there now, and some are better than others.

We know it’s difficult to make an informed decision when buying something like this, so we’ve put together a list of the best there is to offer.

If you’re looking for a walker that doubles up as a ride-on toy, then look no further!

How we review

We review by listening to real parents. For us, nothing beats the opinions and real-life experience of the people using the products we review.

For this review, we collected and read hundreds of reviews, and talked to the parents who wrote them.

Sometimes what a company tries to sell as a feature either doesn’t work as intended or winds up as an annoyance. We know that parents won’t hold back when asked about these features.

Therefore, all the reviews below, although written by us are based on the trial and error of real parents.

Our Reviews

Of course, your choice of walker and ride-on toy is entirely up to you. We strongly suggest having a look around and thinking about what kind of thing you are looking for.

All push walker toys should be stable and sturdy. Falling over is a normal part of learning to walk, but a good push walker should help babies stay on their feet as much as possible.

It’s also important that this kind of toy is durable. This is particularly the case with riding toys, which are forever bumping into obstacles.

Beyond the basics, a lot of today’s toys feature extra entertainment and fun, educational activities.

It’s true there are a lot to choose from, but here is a list of our favorites!

Editor’s Choice: VTech Sit-to-Stand Alphabet Train

VTech Sit-to-Stand Alphabet Train ReviewVTech produce educational toys for children that are well-known and loved by parents all around the world.

The Sit-to-Stand Alphabet Train is a fun toy for both very young children and toddlers. It can not only help babies with learning to walk, but also teach them the alphabet and basic numeracy.

The real beauty of this toy is that it doubles up as both a floor toy and a ride on – it can be disassembled and reassembled to suit different children’s needs. When toddlers master walking with the train engine, the ride-on carriage can be transformed into a wagon to be loaded with toys and pulled about.

With all the different functions of this ride-on walker – it provides fun learning for one year olds through to toddlers – it’s as if you’re getting a whole bunch of toys in one.

Beyond what we’ve already mentioned, the Alphabet Train has a number of other advantages that set it apart from the competition:

VTech Sit-to-Stand Alphabet Train

Fisher-Price are another leading maker of children’s toys with a huge range of quality products that are popular among parents and kids alike. The Bounce, Stride and Ride Elephant is no exception.

PROS:
  • It features 10 different kinds of hands-on activity for children to get engrossed in, these include a story book with sing-along songs, a clock, gears, and alphabet blocks to help introduce kids to letters, numbers, and colors.
  • 16-sided alphabet blocks can be stacked up, inserted into the side of the train, or dropped down a chute and counted before being fired out of the other end.
  • There is a walkie-talkie with a mashable dial pad, which kids can use to role play conversations with various animal buddies.
  • It is a pretty sturdy toy that can take any number of collisions with walls and furniture – its durability means it can be handed down from child to child.

CONS:
  • You’ll be hard put to find much wrong with this ride-on toy – it really is a quality product with a number of strong features. However, a few parents did comment on its size; the toy is a bit bulky, and it may take up a bit of room in storage.
  • You might also want to think about the price of this product, as it isn’t the most affordable toy in the shop!

Fisher-Price 3-in1 Bounce, Stride and Ride Elephant

Fisher-Price 3-in1 Bounce, Stride and Ride Elephant ReviewFisher-Price are another leading maker of children’s toys with a huge range of quality products that are popular among parents and kids alike. The Bounce, Stride and Ride Elephant is no exception.

This combination of walker and ride-on is designed for different stages in a baby’s development: it can be used as a sit and play toy for the very young, a walker to support baby’s first steps, and a scoot and ride toy for adventurous toddlers.

Designed to look like an elephant, it’s an adorable, little toy with cute cloth ears that any kid would immediately fall in love with.

This combination of walker and ride-on is designed for different stages in a baby’s development: it can be used as a sit and play toy for the very young, a walker to support baby’s first steps, and a scoot and ride toy for adventurous toddlers.

Of course, there are plenty of other things going on with this toy. Here are some additional features:

PROS:
  • It comes with over 30 songs, tunes, and fun sounds and phrases. When kids bounce on, push, or ride the elephant, it lights up and says cute, encouraging phrases.
  • There is an option for lowering or completely turning off the volume – as fun as these kind of toys are, it’s nice to have the option of taking a break!
  • It has multiple hands-on activities to play around with, including rattle beads, light up buttons on the elephant’s head, and a bouncing bee on a spring. This way, little ones can learn motor skills whilst they play.
  • It’s a sturdy, little toy, and none of the parents we spoke to experienced problems with it toppling over – a common fault with other walkers.
  • It has a bouncy seat which can help strengthen children’s legs and enforce balance and coordination.
  • Also, the wheels operate well on hard and carpeted surfaces – they don’t slide too fast on smoother floors, and it can be taken basically anywhere.

CONS:
  • The wheels can be a bit of a hazard, with some parents telling us their children’s feet got trapped under them.
  • It’s a bit loud. Fortunately, as we mentioned there is a volume off switch.

Playskool Step Start Walk ‘n Ride

Playskool Step Start Walk 'n Ride Review

If you’re looking for a simple yet solid walker and ride-on for your kid, this could be the one for you!

Like the VTech and Fisher-Price toys, this walker and ride-on from Playskool is suitable for younger kids up to toddlers. It features hands-on activities to provide stimulation for even the smallest children, and can be converted into either a walker or a riding toy.

This way the toy keeps pace with a child’s development. First of all, helping to steady baby’s steps. Then, when walking has been mastered, turning into a ride-on toy to whizz about on.

Playskool Step Start Walk 'n Ride

This way the toy keeps pace with a child’s development. First of all, helping to steady baby’s steps. Then, when walking has been mastered, turning into a ride-on toy to whizz about on.

That’s not all. There are some additional advantages to this toy from Playskool:

PROS:
  • Like with all well-designed children’s toys, safety comes first – the Step Start Walk ‘n Ride features a locking mechanism that only allows parents to change the toy from walker to ride-on mode.
  • The main body of the toy features spinning wheels, levers, and clicking gears. All of which provide an entertaining distraction for children and help with learning fine motor skills.
  • One thing we liked about this toy is that it does everything you would expect, but without any silly sounds or music. If you’re looking for a less noisy addition to the toy collection, this could just be it!
  • As it is durable and can survive a lot of vigorous play, this is another great toy that can be stored away and passed on to younger siblings.

CONS:
  • The wheels are pretty slippery on this toy, and lots of parents suggested using it on carpet rather than a harder surface. Even then, it might be a good idea to keep an eye on your child to make sure it’s functioning as intended.
  • Some parents said the size of the toy, either as a walker or rider, simply wasn’t suitable for their child. Of course, the circumstances are different from kid to kid, and what’s right for one family might not be right for another.

Pewi Ybike Ride On Toy and Walking Buddy

Pewi Ybike Ride On Toy and Walking Buddy ReviewLast but not least, the Pewi Ybike Ride On is a push walker/ride-on toy with a bit of a difference.

Unlike the other products in this list, the Pewi Ybike is the only one to not feature buttons, flashing lights, or musical entertainment. However, you shouldn’t imagine that you are getting anything less of a toy.

Pewi Ybike Ride On Toy and Walking Buddy

It is a stripped down, no thrills toy with an emphasis on design quality. Despite being lightweight and portable, it’s made from a strong aluminium frame that is difficult to break.

It is a stripped down, no thrills toy with an emphasis on design quality. Despite being lightweight and portable, it’s made from a strong aluminium frame that is difficult to break.

And, of course, there are other advantages to this toy’s top notch design:

PROS:
  • It’s the only walker and ride-on we’ve found with wheels that move in all directions, giving kids much more freedom of movement and enhancing their coordination and spatial awareness. The wheels on similar toys can only go backwards and forwards, and tend to tip when you try to turn.
  • The wheels have a rubber tread that won’t cause any damage to hard surfaces. They also make the toy suitable for outside and inside use.
  • It can be folded down and stored away. It’s also easy to carry around and take on day trips.

CONS:
  • There aren’t any major problems with this toy. If you’re looking for a simple walker and ride-on, this is definitely your pick. If you want a toy that talks and sings, look elsewhere!
  • Some parents warned that it may tip if used on a sloped surface. Although the odd tumble is part of learning to walk, parents should try their best to ensure this toy is used in the most suitable environment.

Our Final Thoughts

So which to choose?

If you’re looking for a fun toy that can give your child the help and support they need to start walking, we highly recommend getting a ride-on walker.

Conventional walking toys only have the option of letting children push the toy along and finding their balance this way. With the toys in our list you can still do that but, when children get older, they also double up as riding toys.

When comparing the various products available, we have to say that the VTech Sit-to-Stand Alphabet Train is the best pick.

No other toy features so many fun and educational activities, as well as being a sturdy and well-functioning walker and rider.

In this toy, you get a sit-down entertainment center, a push walker, and a train to ride around on all rolled into one. This kind of value for money is unbeatable.

Of course, it’s up to you which one you choose, but if you want our advice, this is the one to go for!
