So you’re thinking of being a baby wearer are ya?

Ok, first things first… while newborn little bundles are as light as a feather, as the months go by and your little bundle of joy grows older, he/she is also going to grow heavier. Hence, toting him around for long periods will be a strain on your back and shoulders, especially if you don’t have much upper-body strength.

Second, what is the weather like in your area? Do you live in a hot, humid, subtropical zone like Miami or Los Angeles? If so, keep in mind that wearing a baby next to you is going to be hot… not just for you, but for your little one as well.

That’s where lightweight mesh carriers come in. Made from ultra-light mesh-like materials, these carriers not only reduce the total weight of the bundle you tote around, but also provide ample ventilation making baby wearing a more pleasant experience for everyone.

PROS:
  • Unfolds or self-stores in seconds.
  • Lightweight, but strong.

  • Since the straps are not padded (lends itself to compactness), some mums do complain of shoulder pain.

Baby K’tan Breeze Baby Carrier by Baby Ktan

Baby K'tan Breeze Baby Carrier by Baby Ktan
Made of a 50-50 mix of light mesh and soft cotton, the Baby K’tan Breeze is a wrap-style carrier whose patented double-loop design makes it the easiest wrap ever to get on and off.

No learning curve here, unlike all the other wraps/slings on the market that come as one long, wide piece of fabric.

Instead, the Baby K’tan Breeze simply slips on like a t-shirt. No knots, wraps, snaps, buckles, rings or tying of any sort is involved.

  • Front or back carrier for newborns to toddler from 8-35 pounds.
  • Weight of carrier: 1 pound

PROS:
  • Easy to use. No buckles, snaps, rings involved. The wearer simply slips it on like a t-shirt.
  • Adjustable back support band.
  • Multiple wearing positions.
  • Distributes the baby’s weight across the caregiver’s shoulders and back.

CONS:
  • Sized carrier that is specific to the individual wearer.
  • Gets a big saggy after use.

USER TIP: When you find the carrier getting saggy, simply run it through a hot wash cycle and throe in the dryer.  This will make your Baby K’tan snug and good as new again.

Ergobaby Cool Air Mesh Baby Carrier by Ergobaby

Ergobaby Cool Air Mesh Baby Carrier by Ergobaby
Despite its name, the Ergobaby Cool is in no way a “cool” carrier, aesthetically speaking that is. That being said, nothing can take away from its comfort – because the makers have definitely prioritized comfort over style here.

Comfortable for the caregiver (the child’s weight is evenly distributed between hips and shoulders) and cozy and ergonomic for the baby, this carrier made up of a mix of cotton, polyester and polyester mesh is perfectly breathable and light.

  • Front or back carrier for kids from 7-45 pounds. Babies between 7 lb (3.2 kg) and 12 lb (5.5 kg) must use the Ergobaby Infant Insert (needs to be purchased separately) with the Ergobaby Carrier
  • Weight of carrier: 1.5 pounds.

Despite its name, the Ergobaby Cool is in no way a “cool” carrier, aesthetically speaking that is. That being said, nothing can take away from its comfort – because the makers have definitely prioritized comfort over style here.

PROS:
  • Material is so soft especially around the leg holes – the softest of all carriers.
  • Since the straps unhook from under your arms, the Ergobaby Cool is by far the easiest carrier to get on and off.
  • Mesh “vents” on the main panel as well as the straps.
  • Stash it anywhere… well almost. You can simply roll it up and put it into the diaper bag
  • Water repellent

CONS:
  • No pockets whatsoever… so no place to stash your phone, or your keys.
  • The waist strap is a tad too long. This is not exactly a con… more of an observation rather. In fact, one new mother who was pregnant with her second baby loved the fact that the waist strap was long enough to go around her pregnant belly.

Made from high quality sturdy fabric, the Eco Cub Baby Wrap is a sturdy feat of babywear engineering. Its stretchy knit-in spandex gives a flexible custom fit and its width allows for the weight bearing to be done by the entire upper body.

PROS:
  • Fits easily into the diaper bag and wraps around most body (even petite ones) without excess bulk thanks to it being just the right length.
  • The wrap has a label tag conveniently place right at the center. This, of course, helps you position the baby just right for optimal comfort.
  • The stretchy material makes it easy to fit the baby in nice and snug.
  • Material is soft (like a well-loved t-shirt) but durable at the same time. Hold up well to wear.
  • Has an “end pocket” – great for tucking in the whole length of the wrap for storage and transportation.

CONS:
  • You have to wrap/tie it before leaving the house so that you don’t have to worry about touching the floor of the parking lot or any other public space.
  • Not easy to get the child in or out of it once it is wrapped.
  • You need to learn how to tie this wrap efficiently. There is just no way around that!
